CLINTON, N.Y. -- Sophomore Jack Arend went 4-4 at the plate with a triple and four runs batted in to lead the Bates baseball team to a 9-1 win at Hamilton Tuesday afternoon.

Arend (Newfields, N.H.) scored a pair of runs and drew a walk as well in the victory. Senior Connor Speed (San Diego, Calif.) tossed five innings of shutout ball to earn his first win of the year. 

The Bobcats (9-11) took the lead for good in the top of the first inning. Sophomore Pat Beaton (West Newbury, Mass.) walked to start the frame against Hamilton starter Dan DePaoli (2-2). Beaton stole second and Arend singled him to third. Sophomore Zach Avila (San Francisco, Calif.) grounded out to second to plate Beaton. 

The Continentals (12-12) used nine pitchers in the game. After DePaoli tossed a pair of innings, Charlie Lynn threw a scoreless third and Chris Keane shut Bates down in the fourth. 

But the Bobcats plated four in the fifth off reliever Carter King. With one out, senior Asher MacDonald (Hillsborough, N.C.) got hit by a pitch. Sophomore Will Sylvia (Newton, Mass.) singled down the left field line and Beaton walked to load the bases. 

Then Arend cleared the bases with a triple to left center, the first triple of his collegiate career. Avila drove Arend in with a sacrifice fly and Bates grabbed a 5-0 lead.

Speed (1-3) worked around trouble all afternoon, escaping a bases loaded jam in the second and leaving a man stranded each inning after that. He allowed four hits and issued four walks while striking out two on 87 pitches. 

Junior Justin Foley (Lynnfield, Mass.) threw three innings of one-run ball out of the bullpen in relief of Speed. Meanwhile the Bobcats added to their lead in the top of the eighth. MacDonald walked to start the frame and sophomore Jon Lindgren (Plainville, Conn.) bunted for a single. Both runners advanced 90 feet due to an error and Beaton drew another walk to load the bases. Arend walked to drive in MacDonald and Avila's second sacrifice fly of the game plated Lindgren. Then junior Dan Trulli (Melrose, Mass.) doubled in Beaton and Arend to make the score 9-0 in favor of Bates.

The Continentals scored their lone run of the game in the bottom of the eighth thanks to a Dean Rosenberg double and a Nate Goodman RBI single.

First-year Peter Schuldt (Winnetka, Ill.) worked around three walks to pitched a scoreless ninth to secure the win for Bates.

Avila drove in three runs on the afternoon despite not recording a hit. Meanwhile Beaton drew three walks and scored three times. The Bobcats outhit the Continentals 10-7. 

Bates continues its road trip with a game at Rensselaer Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.
