Oglethorpe falls at Piedmont in pitcher's duel

The Oglethorpe baseball team found themselves locked in a pitcher's duel Wednesday evening with the Piedmont Lions in Demorest, Georgia, and the Lions won out 3-2, scoring 2 runs in the sixth to vault ahead of the Stormy Petrels and drop them to 1-4 on the season.

Piedmont grabbed an early lead in the first inning, marking the fifth time in as many games that the Petrels' opponent drew first blood. The home side only held a 1-0 edge into the fifth inning, though, and the Petrels fought back with a couple runs in that frame. Sophomore second baseman Jonathan Cruz led off with a walk and senior shortstop Alex Featherstone followed with a single. Junior left fielder Will Arnold came next with a sacrifice to put both runners in scoring position, and senior center fielder Chris Keane singled to drive both of them in and give the Petrels a 2-1 lead.

Keane was left on third base, however, and Piedmont responded with a couple runs of their own in the sixth. The Petrels had runners in scoring position in each of the final three innings, but couldn't drive any of them in. That allowed Piedmont to hold on for the 3-2 victory.

The Petrels got good pitching throughout. Sophomore right-hander Carson Weir allowed just 3 runs while scattering five hits over six innings, walking two and striking out four over 108 pitches. He suffered the tough-luck loss.

Freshman righty Colby James followed that by not allowing a baserunner over two innings of work, striking out three in the process.

Featherstone and Keane both went 2-for-4 at the plate with a walk. Keane also netted a stolen base.

The Petrels are set to get back to action over the weekend, when they'll take on Berry in a three-game set from Mount Berry, Georgia, beginning with a doubleheader Saturday at noon.
