LEXINGTON, Va. – Junior Nick Graziano/Virginia Beach pitched seven shutout innings with seven strikeouts in the second game, while senior captain Ryan Clawson/Moseley and sophomore Ethan Currin/Toano each had two RBIs in the first game, as Hampden-Sydney College split an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) baseball doubleheader on the road at Washington and Lee University on Saturday in Lexington. Senior captain Nick Grohowski/Chesterfield and sophomore Tymothy Hart/Powhatan each had two RBIs in the 8-0 nightcap with Graziano gaining the mound win, while sophomore Owen Tappy/Charlotte, NC took the pitching setback in relief in the 10-6 opener for the visiting Tigers (3-2, 1-1) against the host Generals (1-1, 1-1).

In game two, H-SC scored eight runs on nine hits … scoring two runs in both the second and third innings, and four runs in the eighth.

In the second, sophomore captain Ryan Boyce/Suffolk (0-3, RBI) walked and junior Trey Karnes/Mechanicsville (2-3) was hit by a pitch to open the at-bat, and both later crossed the plate when senior captain Matt Muehleck/Martinsville (2-5) reached base with two outs courtesy of a throwing error. In the third, Clawson (0-4) reached base on a fielder's choice and scored when Boyce reached on another throwing error. Currin (1-5), who had singled ahead of Boyce, later crossed the plate, as well, on a sacrifice fly by Grohowski (0-2, 2 RBIs).

In the eighth, freshman pinch runner Trent Jones/Virginia Beach (0-1) and Muehleck, who had reached on a bunt single, each scored on a two-run double to right center field by Hart (2-6, 2 RBIs). Hart would cross the plate on a run-scoring single to center field by freshman Lucas Burnette/Hurt (1-3, RBI), and Burnette later scored when Grohowski drew a bases-loaded walk.

Graziano (1-1) started and pitched the first 7.0 scoreless innings, yielding just four hits with seven strikeouts and four walks. Junior Kieran Conway/Chesapeake tossed a scoreless inning, allowing no hits with no strikeouts and no walks, and freshman Ryan Portes/Midlothian also pitched a scoreless inning, allowing one hit with one strikeout and no walks.

In game one, H-SC scored six runs on six hits … scoring one run in the third inning and five runs in the fourth. W&L scored two runs in the second inning, three runs in the sixth and five runs in the eighth.

In the third, Hart (1-4, RBI) walked with one out and later scored on a two-out, RBI single to left field by Clawson (2-4, 2 RBIs). In the fourth, junior Mark Evans/Yorktown (1-4) doubled to right center field with one out and scored on a two-out, run-scoring single to right field by Hart, who later crossed the plate when Boyce (0-5) reached base on a throwing error. Burnette (0-3), who had walked, also scored during the at-bat on an infield single from Clawson, while Boyce and Clawson crossed the plate when Currin (1-4, 2 RBIs) provided a two-run single up the middle.

Junior Trenton Tiller/Powhatan started the first game and pitched the first 5.2 innings, allowing nine hits and five runs, two earned, with six strikeouts and one walk. Tappy (2-1) took the loss with the final 2.1 innings, yielding five hits and five runs, all earned, with three strikeouts and no walks.

H-SC is scheduled to play on the road again in a non-conference game at Christopher Newport University on Tuesday, March 9, at 2 p.m. in Newport News.
