ASHLAND, Va. – Seniors Mike Nickles (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) and Jacob Selden (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass) combined for 8 hits, 7 RBI and 6 runs in the nightcap as the No. 12 Randolph-Macon baseball team split an ODAC doubleheader with No. 18 Shenandoah on Saturday afternoon.

How It Happened: Game 1

  • The Hornets put their first two batters on in the top of the first, but senior right-hander Matt Nickles (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) fanned the next three hitters to keep SU off the scoreboard. The Yellow Jackets would start their scoring in the bottom of the frame. Senior Ryan Duphorn (Erial, N.J./Paul VI) reached on an error and moved to second on a bunt single by sophomore Brooks Mazey (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run).  Sophomore Ethan Iannuzzi (Chesterfield, Va./Cosby) singled through the left side to load the bases. Mike Nickles delivered a sacrifice fly to center to plate Duphorn with the game's first run. Senior Reece Yeargain (Chester, Va./Benedictine) laid down a perfect squeeze bunt to bring home Mazey, giving R-MC a 2-0 lead.
  • The Yellow Jackets would add to their lead in the second. With two away, freshman Grayson Bush (Charlottesville, Va./Monticello) singled and moved to third on a double to right by Duphorn. A single to right by Mazey drove in both runners, giving R-MC a 4-0 advantage.
  • SU had runners on the corners with one away in the third, but Matt Nickles struck out the next to thwart the rally. The Hornets had a leadoff triple in the fourth, but he could not score. SU had a leadoff walk in the fifth and the runner reached third on a failed pickoff attempt. With two away, a wild pitch hit the bricks behind home plate sharply. Selden tossed the ball to Matt Nickles, who tagged the runner out at the plate to keep the Hornets scoreless.
  • The Hornets got on the board in the top of the seventh, but the Yellow Jackets answered in the bottom of the inning. Duphorn ripped a leadoff triple to right center and scored on a sacrifice fly to short center by Iannuzzi to give R-MC a 5-1 lead.
  • SU would score three in the eighth and a pair of unearned runs in the ninth to pull out the victory.

How It Happened: Game 2

  • The Hornets put up one in the first and four in the second to take the early lead. Selden belted a leadoff homer to right in the bottom of the second, his first of the season, to make it 5-1.
  • The offense would continue for R-MC in the third. Bush had a leadoff double to left and Duphorn walked. A base hit by Iannuzzi plated Bush to make it 5-2. Mike Nickles crushed a long homer to right center to level the score at 5-5.
  • The Yellow Jackets would take the lead in the fourth. Bush again had a leadoff double and Duphorn walked. A base hit by Iannuzzi loaded the bases. Bush would come home on a wild pitch and Duphorn scored on a sacrifice fly by Mike Nickles as R-MC went up 7-5. Following a walk to Mooney, Selden drilled a two-run triple to right center to make it 9-5. Selden would score on a double by Mazey as R-MC doubled up SU 10-5.
  • The Hornets got one in the top of the sixth before the Yellow Jackets responded in the bottom of the frame. Mike Nickles had a leadoff single and moved to third on an infield hit by Selden. After Selden moved to second on a wild pitch, Yeargain sent a double to right center to knock in both runners to make it 12-6. A single up the middle by Mazey brought home Yeargain to give the home team a 13-6 advantage.
  • SU got its final run in the seventh before R-MC finished the scoring in the bottom of the seventh. Mike Nickles had a leadoff triple and came home on a double by Mooney, who scored on a base hit by Mazey to make the final 15-7.
