W&J extends winning streak to 20 straight after Sunday sweep of Waynesburg

WAYNESBURG, Pa – The 17th ranked Washington & Jefferson College baseball team ran its school record winning streak to 20 games with a doubleheader sweep of Waynesburg University on Sunday. 
 
W&J completed the sweep of the four-game weekend series. The Presidents outscored the Yellow Jackets in the series by a combined 54-9 score. The victories extended W&J's winning streak Waynesburg to 12 straight games. 
 
W&J moves its overall record to 20-0. The Presidents are 15-0 in PAC play. Waynesburg falls to 4-12 overall and 2-10 in the league. 


Game One – W&J 10, Waynesburg 4

Peter Kalinski (Washington, D.C./Saint John's College) opened the game one scoring with a solo home run in the top of the first inning. The Presidents tacked on another first inning run when Nate Rush (Wheeling, W.Va./The Linsly School) singled home Adam Morris (South Park, Pa./South Park), who had doubled earlier in the frame. 
 
Waynesburg had a chance to answer in the bottom of the first, as the host team loaded the bases with two outs. However, Nick Drake (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) was able to induce an inning-ending groundout. 
 
The Presidents added five runs in the top of the fourth inning. Morris led off with a single and moved to second on a walk to Adam Moore (Olean, N.Y./Archbishop Walsh). Rush collected his second RBI of the day when he singled home Morris. Mike Graziani (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) smashed a two-run double to plate Moore and Rush to make it 5-0. 
 
Tyler Horvat (Irwin, Pa./Penn Trafford) broke it open with a two-out two-run double that swelled the lead to 7-0. The Horvat double chased Waynesburg starting pitcher Zach Straub after just 3.2 innings. 
 
W&J scored three more times in the top of the fifth inning. Rush collected his third hit of the game, as his RBI single scored Morris. Graziani tacked on a run-scoring sac fly and Logan Scheider (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny) singled home Rush to extend the W&J lead to 10-0. 
 
Waynesburg scored the final four runs but W&J finished off the 10-4 victory in game one with relative ease.
 
Drake improved his record to 4-0 by tossing 7.0 strong innings on the hill. Drake allowed two runs (one earned) on seven hits. 
 
Rush finished with three hits and three RBI to lead the offense. Graziani finished with two hits and three RBI while Morris collected two hits and scored three runs. 
 
Game Two – W&J 11, Waynesburg 0
 
The Presidents struck first in game two with a pair of runs in the top of the first. Walks to Rush and Morris gave Sam Quinn (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) an opportunity with runners in scoring position. Quinn delivered a two-run single with two outs. 
 
W&J added another run in the third inning when Horvat singled, stole second and eventually came around to score on an RBI groundout by Kalinski that made the score 3-0. 
 
The Presidents put the game away with eight runs in the top of the sixth. W&J sent 13 batters to the plate in the frame. 
 
Quinn led off with a single and scored on a pinch hit RBI single by Alec Jackson (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson). A two run double by Roman Samson (Tampa, Fla./Berkeley Prep) extended the W&J lead to 6-0. 
 
Horvat then hit his second triple of the day, as he drove in Samson. A wild pitch then scored Horvat to push the Presidents lead to 8-0. An RBI single by Quinn scored Rush for the ninth run. Dan Beistel (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield) walked to force home the 10th run and a pinch hit RBI single by Jonathan Haines (Arkport, N.Y./Arkport) made it 11-0. 
 
Quinn led the charge with three hits and three RBI in game two. 
 
Shane Fox (Valencia, Pa./Mars) started and worked four shutout innings on the mound. Fox allowed just one hit and struck out two Yellow Jackets. Mason Kolbe (Bradenton, Fla./Out-of-Door Academy) tossed a scoreless fifth inning out of the bullpen. Kamden Kautz (Oro Valley, Ariz./Ironwood Ridge) retired the side in order in the sixth and Michael Zito (Nashville, Tenn./Hume-Fogg) pitched a scoreless seventh. 

W&J returns to action with a home doubleheader against Chatham University on Saturday, April 17.
