HARRISONBURG, Va. – Junior Will Hass (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's Belfield) went 6 for 9 with two runs and four RBI as the No. 12 Randolph-Macon baseball team swept a doubleheader at Eastern Mennonite on Saturday afternoon.

The Basics

Score: #12 Randolph-Macon 6-17, Eastern Mennonite 4-1 (Game 1 – 10 innings)

How It Happened: Game 1

  • The Yellow Jackets started the scoring in the second. Hass had a leadoff single, moved to second on a wild pitch, advanced to third on a double play and came home on a base hit by senior Reece Yeargain (Chester, Va./Benedictine) as the visitors took a 1-0 lead.
  • The Royals took the lead with two in the seventh before R-MC responded in the eighth. Sophomore Ethan Iannuzzi (Chesterfield, Va./Cosby) had a leadoff single and was sacrificed to second by senior Mike Nickles (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge). A double by Hass drove in Iannuzzi with the tying run.
  • EMU again went ahead in the eighth before R-MC answered in the ninth as junior Spencer Pietruszynski (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) belted a one-out homer to level the score at 3.
  • Senior Tyler Dunn (Salisbury, Md./James M. Bennett) retired the Royals in order in the bottom of the ninth to force an extra frame.
  • Hass drew a walk to start the 10th and was replaced on first by senior Ben Marotske (Dumfries, Va./C.D. Hylton). Senior Jacob Selden (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass) sacrificed Marotske to second. Senior Kevin Mooney (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) had a base hit to drive in Marotske with the go-ahead run. Senior Ryan Duphorn (Erial, N.J./Paul VI) added a two-run single later in the frame to give R-MC a 6-3 advantage.
  • EMU would score an unearned run in the bottom of the 10th but stranded a pair as the Yellow Jackets pulled out a 6-4 victory.  

By The Numbers

  • Duphorn reached three times with a hit and two walks. He had a pair of stolen bases.
  • Iannuzzi, Hass and Yeargain each had two hits.
  • Dunn (2-0) tossed 2.1 hitless innings with two strikeouts in earning the win.

How It Happened: Game 2

  • R-MC scored in the first in the nightcap. Duphorn had a leadoff walk, stole second, moved to third on an error and scored on a sacrifice fly by Mike Nickles.
  • EMU tied it with a run in the bottom of the first, its only run of Game 2.
  • The Yellow Jackets would take the lead for good in the third. Duphorn had a leadoff single and went to second on a base hit by Iannuzzi. After Duphorn stole third and Iannuzzi swiped second, both scored on a single by Hass to make it 3-1.
  • R-MC put up another crooked number in the fourth. Duphorn had an RBI double and Iannuzzi added a run-scoring single. Both scored on a triple by Mike Nickles, who came home on a base hit by Hass as the Yellow Jackets took an 8-1 lead.
  • The Yellow Jackets blew the game open with seven in the sixth, capped by a three-run double by Iannuzzi as R-MC went up 15-1.
  • Sophomore Blake Doggett (Richmond, Va./Hanover) had an RBI single and freshman Trey Pridgen (York, Pa./York Suburban) added a run-scoring double in the ninth to make the final 17-1.

By The Numbers

  • Iannuzzi went 3 for 5 with two runs and four RBI. He extended his hit streak to 15 games. Iannuzzi has reached base in all 22 games in which he has played.
  • Hass went 4 for 5 with three RBI. He went 6 for 9 on the day and raised his batting average to .559.
  • Duphorn went 2 for 3 with two walks, four runs and two RBI.
  • Mike Nickles went 2 for 3 with two runs and three RBI.
  • Sophomore Hayden Snelsire (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) earned the win to raise his record to 5-0. He worked 6.0 innings with two hits, one unearned run, two walks and six strikeouts.
  • Freshman Wyatt Stanley (Beaverdam, Va./Patrick Henry) struck out the three batters he faced in the ninth.
