No. 6 W&J rolls to doubleheader sweep over Thiel

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The No. 6 Washington & Jefferson College baseball team smacked four home runs and outscored Thiel 27-4 in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader sweep at Ross Memorial Park on Saturday afternoon.
 
The Presidents extended their current win streak to seven games and moved to 29-1 on the season, 22-1 in PAC and 16-0 at home. Thiel falls to 12-16, 8-15 PAC.
 
Senior Adam Morris (South Park, Pa./South Park) homered in both games of the twin bill and drove in five runs on the day. Tyler Horvat (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) picked up the win on the mound in game one and went deep and drove in four runs in game two.
 
Game one - W&J 15, Thiel 2
 
Morris opened the scoring in game one with an RBI single to plate Nate Rush (Wheeling, W.Va./The Linsly School) as the Presidents put up three runs in the first inning.
 
Rush tripled in Logan Scheider (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny) in the second and Morris belted a two-run homer two batters later to give W&J a 6-0 lead.
 
The Presidents took advantage of several Tomcat errors in the third to score five runs and extend their lead to 11-0.
 
Peter Kalinski (Washington, D.C./St. John's College) singled home a pair of runs and Roman Samson (Tampa, Fla./Berkeley Prep) launched his first collegiate home run to put the Presidents up 15-0 in the fourth inning.
 
Thiel snapped Horvat's scoreless inning streak at 26 innings a pair of runs in the fifth and neither team scored the rest of the way in the seven-inning contest.
 
Horvat allowed two earned runs and seven hits in five innings of work. He struck out six and walked two to move to 7-0 on the season.
 
Johnny Nixon (Darlington, Pa./Blackhawk) and Cameron Hayman (Windsor, Calif./Windsor) each threw scoreless innings in relief.
 
Morris finished with three runs and four runs batted in. Rush went three-for-three with four runs and two RBI. Kalinski drove in two and scored twice and Scheider had a pair of hits and scored twice.
 
Game two - W&J 12, Thiel 2
 
Game two saw the Presidents and Tomcats tied at one through the game's first three innings and Thiel take a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth.
 
W&J responded with four runs in the fourth, five in the fifth and two in the sixth to take control for good.
 
Samson, Horvat and Kalinski all had RBI singles in the fourth. Horvat highlighted the fifth with a three-run home run and Jason Gregovits (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake) smacked a two-run double in the sixth.
 
Henry Litman (Marietta, Ga./Walton) gave up two runs (one earned) in 6.2 innings. He allowed six hits, walked one and struck out seven to move to 7-0 on the year.
 
Kamden Kautz (Oro Valley, Ariz./Ironwood Ridge) and Michael Zito (Nashville, Tenn./Hume-Fogg) each turned in scoreless innings in relief.
 
Morris homered int eh bottom of the first and walked twice. Adam Moore (Olean, N.Y./Archbishop Walsh) posted three this and one run. Horvat was two-for-give with two runs and four RBI. Gregovitz had two hits, two runs and three RBI.
 
 
The Presidents and Thiel wrap up their series tomorrow in Greenville, Pa.
