Cortland Splits with Brockport in SUNYAC Twinbill

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Cortland scored four runs in the fourth inning and five runs in the sixth to defeat Brockport, 9-1, in a seven-inning contest to salvage a split of a SUNYAC doubleheader with the visiting Golden Eagles. Brockport won the nine-inning first game, 9-4.

Cortland is now 21-5 overall and 12-2 in league play. Brockport, which clinched a SUNYAC playoff berth, is now 14-5 overall and 8-4 in the league. Cortland is in the SUNYAC East and has already sealed the top seed in the division. Brockport is second in the West division. The results of the doubleheader count toward both teams' league marks. Cortland closes its regular-season schedule with a doubleheader Saturday at Fredonia.

Brockport 9, Cortland 4

Brockport broke open a tight game with a five-run top of the fifth that was highlighted by Tom Kretzler's one-out grand slam. The Golden Eagles led 1-0 in the second on Nicholas Pastore's RBI single, and the fifth inning featured a Matt O'Dair walk, a Jake Sisto double, a one-out error and a Ryan Mansell bases-loaded walk prior to Kretzler's homer.

Cortland scored in the fifth when James Varian (Hopewell Junction/Trinithy-Pawling) doubled and scored on an error after a single by Ben Rhodes (Amsterdam). Brockport, however, scored three in the seventh on Mansell's leadoff homer, a double steal after a failed pickoff play, and an O'Dair RBI single.

The Red Dragons tried to make things interesting with three runs in the bottom of the eighth, produced primarily by subs. Brian Van Beveren (Camillus/West Genesee) doubled in a run and later scored on an error. Brendan May (McGraw) hit an RBI single through the right side to make it 9-4 and put runners on first and third, but a groundout ended the inning.

O'Dair finished 2-fof-2 with a walk and hit by pitch in four plate appearances, Sisto went 2-for-4, and Mansell drove in two runs and scored twice for Brockport. Paul Franzese (Somers) finished 3-for-4 to lead Cortland.

Andrew Huffman improved to 4-0 for Brockport after allowing two runs, one earned, on six hits over seven innings. He struck out six and walked one. Kyle Canavally gave up two unearned runs over the final two innings. Cortland starter Zack Durant (Verona/V-V-S) took his first loss of the year and is now 5-1. He gave up six runs, five earned, in five innings with four hits allowed. He struck out five and walked two.

Cortland 9, Brockport 1

Cortland trailed 1-0 after Brockport scored in the top of the third on Daniel Delgaizo's RBI single, but the Red Dragons were able to throw out another runner trying to score on the play to end the inning.

Cortland grabbed the lead with four runs in the bottom of the fourth. Colin BeVard (Syracuse/West Genesee) walked and Scott Giordano (Croton-on-Hudson/Croton-Harmon) singled. Matthew Krafft (Cornwall) then bunted for a single, and a throwing error on the play allowed BeVard to score. A Franzese groundout scored Giordano to give Cortland a 2-1 lead, Varian walked, and Rhodes hit an RBI single to score Krafft. Andrew Michalski (Buffalo/St. Francis) added an RBI single two batters later.

The Red Dragons loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth on a Franzese infield single, a Varian walk and a Rhodes bunt single. A wild pitch scored Franzese, and a Michalski walk with one out re-loaded the bases. Antonio Pragana (Hopewell Junction/John Jay) hit a three-run triple to right center to put Cortland ahead 8-1, and BeVard singled up the middle to drive home the final run.

Spencer Weyand (Hornell) started and allowed two hits, three walks and one run in two-plus innings with two strikeouts. Bailey Gauthier (Camillus/West Genesee) entered in the third with two runners on, and although he allowed the Delgaizo RBI single, he got out of further trouble and threw three more innings to earn the win. He's now 4-1 on the season. Gauthier officially allowed no runs on two hits with no walks and four strikeouts in four innings of work. Liam Krasney (Greenville) pitched a scoreless seventh.

Brockport starter Trevor McCarthy dropped to 2-1 after giving up six runs on six hits over five frames. He struck out five and walked three.

BeVard and Rhodes each went 2-for-3 with an RBI, Giordano was 2-for-4, Michalski finished 1-for-2 with a walk and an RBI, and Franzese was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Pastore and Sisto each finished 2-for-3 for the Golden Eagles.
