Pitching leads No. 4 W&J to road sweep at Saint Vincent

LATROBE, Pa. -- The No. 4 ranked Washington & Jefferson College baseball team used a pair of strong pitching performances to earn a road sweep at Saint Vincent in a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday. W&J took game one by an 8-3 score before battling for a 2-1 victory in game two. 

The sweep improves W&J to 25-1 in PAC play and 33-1 overall in 2021. Saint Vincent falls to 14-16 overall and 13-12 in league play.

Game One - W&J 8, Saint Vincent 3

Henry Litman (Marietta, Ga./Walton) tossed a complete game to lead W&J to the game one victory. The junior right-hander has an 8-0 record in 2021. Litman allowed just one earned run in 7.0 innings of work. He struck out seven, walked just one and allowed just four hits. 

Saint Vincent held a 3-0 lead after the first inning. The host Bearcats took advantage of an error to plate two unearned runs in the opening frame. 

W&J used a six-run third inning to take control of the game. Peter Kalinski (Washington, D.C./Saint John's College) drew a walk to open the frame. Adam Morris (South Park, Pa./South Park) followed with a single to left field to put a pair of runners on base. Two batters later, Michael Zito (Nashville, Pa./Hume-Fogg) singled home Kalinski for the Presidents' first run.

An RBI double by Nate Rush (Wheeling, W.Va./The Linsly School) plated Morris and moved Zito to third. Saint Vincent was an out away from escaping the frame with the lead. However, a two-run single by Logan Scheider(McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny) put the Presidents in front 4-3. A two-run double by Tyler Horvat (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) gave W&J a three-run cushion at 6-3. 

Pitching with the lead, Litman took control, as he recorded a pair of strikeouts in the bottom of the third. Litman then sat down three Bearcats looking in the fourth. 

W&J padded its lead with an RBI groundout by Rush in the sixth and another RBI double by Horvat in the seventh. Litman retired Saint Vincent in order in the bottom of the seventh to finish off the victory. 

Scheider, the reigning PAC Hitter of the Week recipient, added three more hits and two RBI in game one. Horvat collected two hits and three RBI out of the leadoff spot. Morris and Zito added two hits apiece in a 12-hit attack for the Presidents. 


Game Two - W&J 2, Saint Vincent 1

Horvat and four relievers combined to limit the Bearcats to just three hits over nine innings during a 2-1 W&J win in game two. Horvat allowed just one unearned run on one hit in 5.0 innings. The sophomore struck out eight to as he improved his record to 8-0 in 2021.

W&J scored first with a run in the top of the third inning. Horvat smashed a one-out triple and scored a batter later on a sacrifice fly by Kalinski. Saint Vincent evened the score with a two-out RBI single by Ben Menarchek in the bottom of the fifth. 

The Presidents scored the game-deciding run in the top of the sixth. Zito reached via a bunt single and later scored from third on an errant throw by the Saint Vincent catcher.

Mason Kolbe (Bradenton, Fla./Out-Of-Door Academy), Jameson Campbell (Painesville, Ohio/Painesville Riverside) and Kamden Kautz (Oro Valley, Ariz./Ironwood Ridge) tossed scoreless frames to get W&J to the ninth with the one-run lead. 

Zito retired the side in order in the ninth to record his PAC leading sixth save. 

Horvat, Zito and Adam Moore (Olean, N.Y./Archbishop Walsh) each recorded two hits to pace the W&J offense. 


W&J is scheduled to wrap up the regular season with a home doubleheader against Saint Vincent on Sunday, May 9.
