WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Marymount University closed out the regular season with a pair of critical Atlantic East Conference victories on Class of 2021 Recognition Day, as the Saints defeated Cabrini University at Nationals Youth Academy. With the victories, MU secured the Atlantic East regular season title and enter the postseason as the No. 1 overall seed.

Game One

Late game heroics lifted the Saints to a 5-4 victory over the Cavaliers in the opening contest of the twinbill. Alex Lemery played the hero at the dish in the bottom of the sixth inning with a sacrifice fly that plated Robby Cable for the final run of the contest. Freshman Jake Andrews closed the door in the top of the seventh inning with a strikeout and a fly-out to end the game. For his late-game efforts, Andrews earned his third win of the season.

MU struck first with a bases-loaded walk in the first inning. Cabrini tied the score in the top of the third, but the Saints responded in the bottom of the frame. Ryan Maylie started the rally with a towering home run over the right-field wall. Senior Bill Wojcik followed up a two-out triple from Bobby Leitzel with a no-doubt blast to left field that gave Marymount a 4-1 lead.

Cabrini managed to scratch across runs in the top of the fourth and sixth frames, but the Saints responded late to earn the win. Senior Drew Mead got the start on the mound and struck out five across five innings of work. Six different batters registered a hit for the Saints, while Wojcik led the way with two RBI.

Game Two

The second game of the doubleheader featured another strong pitching matchup, as MU earned a narrow 3-2 win to finish the regular season atop the Atlantic East with a 17-5 overall record and a 15-3 mark in conference action.

Senior Stephen Gerade got the start on the mound and earned his second win of the year. The right-hander tossed six innings, allowed just one earned run, and fanned six batters. At the plate, Will DiGiulian and Cable led the way with two hits apiece. DiGiulian finished 2-for-3 with one run and one walk. Casey Baker and James DiGiulian each finished with one RBI.

Gerade kept the Cavaliers off of the scoreboard until a throwing error allowed Cabrini to take a 1-0 lead. MU answered in the bottom of the frame, as Wojcik came around to score on a balk from Cabrini's Mike Valerio. Cabrini took a 2-1 lead in the top of the sixth inning with a one-run double. The lead change did little to disrupt the Saints, as they fired back in the bottom of the sixth.

With two outs and two runners on, Baker laced a single into right-center that played Wojcik. James DiGiulian plated the final run in the very next at-bat, as the senior rifled the ball into centerfield for a single that allowed his brother, Will, to come around and score.

Clint Wheeler threw the final three innings of the contest and sealed Marymount's triumph in the top of the ninth. The Vienna, Virginia, native worked a one-two-three inning to pick up the save and close out the win for the Saints.

Marymount will return to action when it hosts the Atlantic East Championships after securing the regular season title. The tournament is scheduled for May 18-19, and May 21-22. For the most up-to-date information on the postseason please stay tuned to MarymountSaints.com and AtlanticEast.com
