#2 Cortland Falls Late to #19 N.C. Wesleyan, 5-3

BALTIMORE, MD. – North Carolina Wesleyan scored twice in the top of the eighth to break a 2-2 tie and the nationally 19th-ranked Battling Bishops held on to defeat second-ranked Cortland, 5-3, during the second day of the Baltimore Invitational at Johns Hopkins University. 
 
Cortland suffered its first loss to fall to 4-1 on the season. Four of the Red Dragons' first five games this season have come against top-20 opponents. N.C. Wesleyan improved to 4-3 prior to its game Saturday afternoon against MIT. Cortland wraps up the tournament Sunday at 11 a.m. versus MIT. 
 
Ryan Flansburg (Queensbury) turned in six strong innings on the mound for Cortland and received a no decision. He allowed four hits, one walk and two runs and struck out six. Derrick Carter earned the win for N.C. Wesleyan with seven innings of eight-hit ball with two strikeouts and a walk. He gave up two unearned runs in the first inning. Dylan Cheeley earned the save after allowing one unearned run on two hits over the final two frames. He struck out two and walked one. 
 
Cortland out-hit the Battling Bishops, 10-7. Scott Giordano (Croton-on-Hudson/Croton-Harmon) went 2-for-5 with an RBI, Danny Coleman (Saratoga Springs) finished 1-for-2 with a walk and RBI, and Adam Mieczkowski (Vestal), Andrew Michalski (Buffalo/St. Francis) and Nick Chemotti (Warners/West Genesee) each were 1-for-3. 
 
Emry Jackson led N.C. Wesleyan with a 3-for-4 performance. He homered, drove in two runs and scored twice. Davie Morgan was 2-for-5 with an RBI. 
 
Cortland took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Hunter Holliday (Camden) reached on an error, Matthew Krafft (Cornwall) singled and Giordano hit an RBI single to center. Following a double play, Coleman singled up the middle to drive in a run. 
 
N.C. Wesleyan scored in the third in a one-out Jackson solo homer and tied the game in the fifth on a Zach Scott infield single, a Tyson Bass sac bunt, a wild pitch, and a two-out Jackson RBI single up the middle. 
 
The Battling Bishops began their two-run eighth with a Jackson single and a Jaiden Barker walk. An error on the next ball in play allowed a run to score and, following an intentional walk to load the bases, Zach Lyon was hit by a pitch to force in a run. Cortland escaped further damage with a flyout, strikeout and fielder's choice to keep the score at 4-2. 
 
Cortland got a run back in the bottom of the eighth. Mat Bruno (Rye) bunted for a single with one out and went to third on the play on a throwing error. Coleman was hit by a pitch and then stole second, with a throwing error by the catcher during the steal allowing Bruno to score. A flyout and lineout ended the threat. 
 
In the ninth, N.C. Wesleyan added an insurance run when, with two outs, Barker reached second on an infield single and throwing error, then came in to score on a Morgan single to left. In the bottom of the ninth, Cortland had runners reach first and second on a one-out Paul Franzese (Somers) pinch-hit single and a two-out AJ Fenton (Fort Salonga/Kings Park) pinch-hit walk but couldn't score.
