Kalinski's go-ahead RBI lifts W&J to 3-2 win over La Roche

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Senior catcher Peter Kalinski(Washington, D.C./Saint John's College) delivered the go-ahead RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning to propel the 22nd ranked Washington & Jefferson College baseball team to a 3-2 win over visiting La Roche Friday afternoon at Ross Memorial Park. 

W&J had to battle out of an early hole, after La Roche picked up an early 2-0 lead after single runs in the top of the first and second innings. 

The Presidents got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning, as sophomore first baseman Joe Lehner(Painesville, Ohio/Lake Catholic) smacked a two-out double down the right field line to bring Evan Sante(Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) home. 

W&J evened the score in the bottom of the sixth inning. Consecutive one-out singles by Kalinski and Sante put a pair of runners into scoring position for the Presidents. A groundout by sophomore right fielder Roman Samson (Tampa, Fla./Berkeley Prep) scored Kalinski to tie the game at 2-2. 

La Roche put a pair of runners on base in the top of the seventh but senior pitcher Jameson Campbell (Painesville, Ohio/Painesville Riverside) punched out Dante DeLillo to escape with the score tied. 

Senior shortstop Nate Rush (Wheeling, W.Va./Linsly School) drew a walk to lead off the eighth and advance to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior third baseman Logan Scheider (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny) to set up Kalinsk's go-ahead single. 

Freshman relief pitcher Dante DiMatteo (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) earned his second save of the season with a scoreless ninth. 

Senior starter Henry Litman (Marietta, Ga./Walton) tossed six effective innings. He allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits. He struck out four and walked one. 

Senior pitcher Kamden Kautz (Oro Valley, Ariz./Ironwood Ridge) picked up the victory, as he tossed a scoreless eighth inning. 

W&J improves to 4-2 overall. The Presidents have 12 days before their next game. W&J will host nationally-ranked Marietta College on Wednesday, March 16. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
