Hampden-Sydney Splits Doubleheader On The Road At Ferrum

FERRUM, Va. -- Sophomore Tillman Butler (Culpeper) had two hits, including a home run and a double, with three RBIs, and freshman Christian Chambers (Midlothian) added a home run and two RBIs in the second game, while freshman Johnny Oates II (Chester) had a home run in the first game, as Hampden-Sydney College split an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) baseball doubleheader on the road at Ferrum College on Sunday in Ferrum. Sophomore Ryan Portes (Midlothian) gained the pitching win in relief in the 11-7 nightcap, while junior Owen Tappy (Charlotte, NC) took the mound setback in the 5-1 opener for the visiting Tigers (7-5, 2-2) against the host Panthers (9-5, 1-1).

In game two, H-SC scored 11 runs on eight hits with four errors … scoring two runs in the second inning, two runs in the third, two runs in the sixth and five runs in the decisive eighth. FC scored seven runs on nine hits with two errors … scoring three runs in the first inning, two runs in the third, one run in the sixth and one run in the eighth.

Highlights for the Tigers in the nightcap included a go-ahead, two-run homer by Butler (2-3, 3 RBIs) in the eighth to make it 8-6, as well as a two-run homer by Chambers (1-4, 2 RBIs) in the third for a 4-3 lead at the time. It was Butler's first home run of the season, and second of his career, while also the second career homer for Chambers. Butler added an RBI double in the second, as did junior captain Ryan Boyce (Suffolk) (2-5, RBI) in the sixth. Freshman Christian Lancaster (Danville) (1-1, RBI) contributed an RBI sacrifice fly in the sixth, while freshman Jaxon Masterson (Raleigh, NC) (1-5, RBI) added a run-scoring single in the eighth. Senior captain Trey Karnes (Mechanicsville) (0-4, RBI) gained an RBI in the eighth, as well, when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Portes (2-0) pitched the eighth inning for the mound win, allowing one hit and one run, earned, with three strikeouts and one walk. Junior Justin Woodall (Mechanicsville) started and pitched the first 3.0 innings, scattering three hits and five runs, two earned, with four strikeouts and no walks. Senior Trenton Tiller (Powhatan) was among seven Tigers who pitched in game two, tossing a scoreless fourth inning, yielding no hits with one strikeout and one walk.

In game one, H-SC scored one run on two hits with two errors … scoring the lone run in the seventh inning. FC scored five runs on nine hits with three errors … scoring one run in the first inning and four runs in the eighth.

Highlights for the Tigers in the opener included Oates (1-4, RBI) hitting his second career home run with two outs in the seventh to stop the no-hit bid by the Panthers' starting pitcher. Chambers (1-4) added a two-out double in the eighth for the visitors.

Senior Nic Graziano (Virginia Beach) started and pitched the first 6.0 solid innings, scattering six hits and one run, earned, with six strikeouts and two walks. Tappy (1-3) tossed the final 2.0 innings, yielding three hits and four runs, three earned, with two strikeouts and two walks.
