DAVENPORT, Fla. -- The 25th ranked Washington & Jefferson College baseball team slugged a pair of home runs and used strong pitching performances to earn a 4-2 victory over Benedictine University (Ill.) Friday in a non-conference game at Northeast Regional Park in Florida.

The victory improves the Presidents to 5-3 overall as they open up their six-game Spring Break slate with a victory.

Jameson Campbell (Painesville, Ohio / Painesville Riverside) turned in a strong effort on the mound to earn his first win of the season. The senior righthander allowed just two runs on five hits over six innings of work. Campbell struck out two and issued just one walk.

Campebll turned away the Eagles in the top of the first, as he induced an inning ending double play to escape an early jam. Back-to-back solo home runs by Peter Kalinski(Washington, D.C. / Saint John's College) and Evan Sante (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) gave W&J a 2-0 lead after an inning of play.

W&J tacked on another run when Trevor Dean (San Diego, Calif./Rancho Bernardo) stroked a one-out double to center field and then came around to score on an error by the Benedictine left fielder.

In the fourth inning, Damen Castillo slugged a two-run home run to get Benedictine on the scoreboard. W&J was able to answer an inning later when Sante brought Kalinski home with an RBI bloop single to left center field to make it 4-2.

Kamden Kautz (Oro Valley, Ariz./Ironwood Ridge) and Dante DiMatteo (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) combined to toss three scoreless innings of relief out of the W&J bullpen to nail down the victory. DiMatteo did not allow a hit and struck out a pair over the final two innings to record his third save. The freshman escaped a bases loaded one-out jam in the eighth.

Sante led the offense with his home run, two RBI and only multi-hit effort for the Presidents.

W&J takes on Beloit College for a pair of seven-inning games on Saturday, March 19. First pitch at Lake Myrtle Park in Auburndale, Fla. is set for 10:30 a.m.
