DAVENPORT, Fla. — The Keuka College Baseball team did not want their spring trip in Florida to end. The Wolves had both ends of a doubleheader against Colby College go to extra innings on Friday.

Keuka College (3-6) lost game one of the doubleheader 6-3 in 10 innings. The Mules then walked off against the Wolves in the eighth inning of game two, winning 11-10.

Colby College 6 vs. Keuka College 3 – 10 innings

The Wolves struck quickly in the bottom of the first. Matt Vaccaro (Fayetteville, N.Y. / Fayetteville-Manlius) doubled to open the inning for the Wolves. He then scored on an RBI single up the middle by Ryan Seales (Saratoga Springs, N.Y. / Saratoga Springs).

The Mules pressured in the third with a runner on third and one out, but starting pitcher Spencer Brown (Feura Bush, N.Y. / Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk) got a strikeout and then snared a hard comebacker and got the out to escape the threat.

Brown held the Mules off-balance all game as Keuka would carry the 1-0 advantage into the seventh. However, Colby got a pinch-hit one-out home run to tie the game. The game would go to extra innings.

Keuka had a chance to win the game in the bottom of the eighth with a runner on third and one out, but Colby made a diving catch and doubled-up the runner to escape the inning.

The Mules would push through in the tenth, scoring five runs to take a 6-1 lead. With two outs, Keuka would load the bases in the bottom of the tenth with a walk and two batters getting hit by the pitch. RJ Murphy (Syracuse, N.Y. / West Genesee) singled to score two. That would be it for the Wolves, however, as Colby got the final out for the 6-3 victory.

Lead Wolf: Following his school-record-setting performance on Monday, Spencer Brown had another strong showing on the mound for the Wolves. The junior struck out nine, pitching into the seventh inning. He allowed just the one run.

Colby College 11 vs. Keuka College 10 – 8 innings

After Colby College took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first, the Wolves responded in a big way in the second. Keuka would load the bases against the Mules. The first run came home as Devyn Scheidt (Brockport, N.Y. / Brockport) was hit by the pitch to force in a run. Matt Vaccaro followed that flaring a two-run single to left. Brady Booher (Rochester, N.Y. / Eastridge) then ripped a ball down the third base line and into the left field corner for a two-run double as Keuka took a 5-3 lead. Following a hit batter and a walk, Donald Nemeth (Guilderland, N.Y. / Guilderland) hit a two-run single. Keuka's final fun scored on a passed ball as the Wolves sent 13 batters to the plate and scored eight runs for the lead.

The Mules got two back in the bottom of the inning, but Keuka did not let Colby gain momentum as the Wolves plated a run in the third on an RBI single by Josh Tryon (Elmira, N.Y. / Thomas A. Edison). Two more runs came for Colby in the bottom of the inning, but Keuka led 9-7 after three.

After a scoreless fourth, Colby got two runs in the fifth to tie the game. Donald Nemeth led off the top of the sixth with a solo home run to left to give the Wolves the lead, but Colby answered right back as they led off the bottom of the inning with a solo home run to tie the game.

Neither team scored in the seventh as the game went to extra innings. The Wolves had a runner on second with one our in the top of the inning, but a strikeout and ground out ended the chance. Three straight singles for Colby in the bottom of the inning ended the game as the Mules defeated the Wolves 11-10 to sweep the doubleheader.

Lead Wolf: Nemeth had a big game for the Wolves. He singled to go along with his first career home run and also worked a walk. The freshman drove in three runs and scored one himself against the Mules.

KC Notes:

  • The Wolves remain winless against the Mules on the diamond. All six games have been played in Florida
  • Friday was the first time since April 2016 and just the second time in program history that the Wolves had both ends of a doubleheader go to extra innings
  • It was just the second and third extra-inning games for Keuka since the 2019 season. The Wolves have lost three straight such games, but have a 20-15-1 record in extra-innings overall
  • Combined for the day, Matt Vaccaro had three hits, two runs batted in, three runs scored, and a pair of stolen bases. Vaccaro also extended his personal best hitting streak to six games

Up Next for Keuka College: The Wolves finished their 2022 spring trip with a 3-6 record. Keuka College will return to action on Wednesday, March 30 when they host Medaille College in a doubleheader at Kuhl Field at 1 p.m.
