MEMPHIS, Tenn. (April 3, 2022) - The Rhodes Lynx secured their ninth straight win, and a series sweep, with a 15-5 mercy-rule win over the Sewanee Tigers on Sunday at Stauffer Field. The victory moves Rhodes to 18-10-1 on the year, and 9-3 in SAA play. They trail the Berry Vikings by one game in the conference standings.

The twenty run ballgame on Sunday began with two scoreless frames from pitchers Aiden Lenen and Jaxon Cady. Rhodes managed to break through in the bottom of the third in a huge inning. A walk, a base hit, and an infield single loaded the bases with no one out. The momentum seemed to be shut down when Dante Messina grounded into a double play in the next at bat, scoring Kofi Whiethead, but putting two outs on the board. John McNair followed with a double to the gap, plating Ben BurkhartWood Kimbrough kept the rally going with a single to center that brought home McNair. A walk and single loaded the bases, and prompted a pitching change. The new arm did not matter as Bryce Anderson ripped a double to center that cleared the bases, making it 6-0.

In the fourth, the Lynx received two more runs on a dinger from Messina.

The top of the sixth inning featured a comeback attempt for the Tigers. Back-to-back hits from Wesley House and Mac Gortney drove in three runs. Two batters later, a wild pitch brought in Gortney to make the score 8-4. Rhodes was quick to respond with a strong sixth inning of their own. With the bases loaded, Kimbrough doubled home Messina and York. A Will Heurtin sac fly then brought in McNair to make the score 11-4.

After Sewanee added one in the seventh, Rhodes responded with a pair. Peter York struck out swinging with Bryce Anderson on third, but the ball was in the dirt. As the Tigers catcher threw down to first to retire York, Anderson took off from third and scored. Messina followed with a single that brought in Whitehead to run the score to 13-5. In the bottom of the eighth, pinch-hitter Julie Brown went yard, scoring himself and Jack Raymark to end the game at 15-5.

The Lynx offense struck for 17 hits in this one, with eleven different players recording a hit. York and Messina each had three hits to lead the way. Cady was sharp in his start, going four scoreless innings with two hits, four walks and five strikeouts.

Next up for the Lynx is a three-game set with the Millsaps Majors. Rhodes will travel to Jackson, Mississippi next weekend for a Saturday doubleheader and a single game on Sunday.
