Baseball stumbles at Stevenson

 At the Plate

  • Alex Jenkins (Ashburn, VA/Stone Bridge) led Hood at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.
  • Stephen Sommer (Leesburg, VA/Loudoun) scored three times and recorded an RBI on the day.
  • James DeProspero (Leesburg, VA/Loudoun County) had a triple and two RBIs.
  • Matt Schopf (Middletown, PA/Middletown) ended the afternoon with two RBIs.
  • Nick Rampone (Mendham, NJ/Randolph) and Jacob Saylor (Walkersville, MD/Walkersville) each had an RBI.

On the Mound 

  • Matthew Stout (Coatesville, PA/Coatesville) started the game for the Blazers, allowing three runs on six hits in 4.0 innings of work. 
  • Scott Ash (Middletown, PA/Middletown) pitched 1.1 innings out of the bullpen, giving up six runs on five hits. He struck out one and walked three.
  • Ryan McCreedy (Sparta, NJ/Pope John XXIII) worked through 1.2 innings, allowing one run on four hits. He allowed one walk, and took the loss. 
  • Frank Spaide (Bensalem, PA/Conwell-Egan Catholic) pitched a scoreless eighth inning, only allowing one hit. 

Stevenson 10, Hood 9

  • Hood took the lead in the first inning. Sommer reached on a hit-by-pitch and scored when DeProspero tripled into the right center field gap to score Sommer from first.
  • Stevenson responded in the bottom half of the first inning with three runs of its own. Jonathan Brandt led the inning off with a home run that tied the game up at 1-1. Billy McAdam and Trevor Smoot followed with back-to-back singles for the Mustangs. Amani Jones brought home both McAdam and Smoot on a single into the left field gap to give Stevenson a 3-1 lead after one. 
  • The Blazers scored six runs in the second inning to take the lead back. Jack Patterson (Boyds, MD/Northwest) and Keegan Brennan (Lake Wynonah, PA/Nativity BVM) both walked to start the inning, Tyler Schwarzman (Mechanicsburg, PA/Mechanicsburg) then singled to load the bases with no one out. Rampone was hit by a pitch that walked Patterson home. Jenkins followed with a single through the right side to plate both Brennan and Schwarzman to give Hood the lead back 4-3. Sommer reached on a bunt during the next at-bat and scored Rampone to extend the lead for the Blazers. Jenkins scored on a DeProspero groundout to third base for Hood's fifth run of the inning. The last run of the inning came by way of a Saylor reaching base on an error by Brandt, at third base that brought home Sommer from third. Hood led after two innings by a score of 7-3.
  • In the fifth, after Trevor Smoot reached base on an error by Ash, Tommy Holcomb homered to cut Hood's lead to 7-5.
  • The Blazers got those runs back in the sixth inning with help from the Mustang defense. Rampone started the inning reaching first on a Brandon Perillo error at second base. Sommer walked to put two runners on base, and during the next at-bat Schopf hit a two-out single to bring home both Rampone and Sommer. Those runs were the last of the game for Hood as they led 9-5. 
  • The Mustangs battled back to tie the game in the bottom of the inning. With one out two runners in scoring position, back-to-back walks by Trevor Smoot and Holcomb ended up scoring Brandt for the first run of the inning. Jones singled home McAdam in the next at-bat, as Stevenson's deficit was down to two. After a pitching change by Hood, Dylan Scott singled into left center to bring home both Trevor Smoot and Holcomb  to tie the game at 9-9.
  • Stevenson took the lead in the seventh with what ultimately was the winning run. Brandt doubled to left and scored on an RBI single by McAdam.

For the Opponent 

  • Brandt led the Mustangs at the plate scoring three times, going 2-for-4 with a homer, a double and an RBI. 
  • McAdam recorded a double and an RBI, going 3-for-5 on the day. He also scored twice and had a stolen base. 
  • Jones turned in a 3-for-5 day with a double and three RBIs.
  • Holcomb hit a three-run home run, scored two times, and walked twice. 
  • Kyle Pellegrino started the game for the Mustangs, giving up six runs on three hits in an inning plus. After allowing a single run in the first, he allowed five straight hitters to reach base to open the second before the Mustangs went to the bullpen.  
  • Matt Hinderliter threw four innings out of the bullpen, only giving up one run on one hit.
  • Jake Pigeon gave up two runs in the sixth inning.
  • Carl Sansbury received the win for Stevenson, throwing a perfect 1.2 innings.
  • Matt Reich struck out two in the ninth inning to get the save for the Mustangs.

Notes

  • Hood falls to 8-23 overall and 1-8 in the MAC Commonwealth on the year.  
  • Stevenson improved to 11-21-1 and 6-3.
