Bats stay hot as W&J completes sweep of Franciscan with 15-3 win

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson baseball team used a 17-hit attack to record a 15-3 victory over visiting Franciscan University of Steubenville in a Presidents' Athletic Conference game Sunday at Ross Memorial Park. 

Four Presidents registered multi-hit efforts in the victory for the Presidents.

John Klein (Vienna, Va./Madison) earned the start in center field and finished with three hits and three RBI. Joe Lehner (Painesville, Ohio / Lake Catholic), Tyler Horvat(Irwin, Pa./Penn Trafford) and Peter Kalinski (Washington, D.C./Saint Johns College) finished with two hits apiece. 

W&J staked claim to an early lead with a five-run first inning. Kalinski got things started with an RBI single to score Horvat. The big blow of the inning came via a three-run home run by Evan Sante (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum). The home run was the ninth of the season and third of the series for Sante. Klein tacked on a sac fly to make it 5-0 after the first. 

The Presidents pushed seven runs across in the fourth inning. Nate Rush (Wheeling, W.Va./The Linsly School) drove home two runs with a single to stretch the lead to 8-1. A few batters later, Roman Samson (Tampa, Fla./Berkeley Prep) smacked an RBI double. The biggest hit of the inning came from Lehner, who sent the first pitch of his at bat over the right field fence for a grand slam. The home run was the second of the season for Lehner. 

Klein tacked on two more runs with a single that plated Nolan Lutz (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette) and Connor Helm(Murrysville, Pa. / Franklin Regional).

Horvat and Jameson Campbell (Painesville, Ohio/Painesville Riverside) combined to toss nine strong innings on the mound. Horvat moved his record to 5-1. He allowed two runs on five hits in five innings. Campbell was strong in relief to earn his first save of the season. Campbell struck out eight in four innings of work. He allowed just one run on two hits. 

The sweep improves W&J to 26-7 overall and 19-1 in conference play. Franciscan falls to 4-11 in the PAC and 12-16 overall. 

W&J travels to Grove City on Wednesday, April 27 to complete its series with the Wolverines. First pitch is 4 p.m.
