BW Baseball Completes Opening Day Sweep

DANVILLE, Ky. – The No. 10 nationally ranked Baldwin Wallace University baseball team knocked off Centre (Ky.) College in a non-conference doubleheader on the Gary Wright Field inside Fishman Park. BW (2-0) opened the day with 11-0 win in eight innings and then used a late inning surge to pick up a 9-7 win over Centre (0-2).

Game 1 was highlighted the pitching duo of senior All-OAC right-handed pitcher Dawson Gabe (Lawrence, Ind.) and junior right-handed pitcher Kyle Maruna (Medina) who combined for eight no-hit innings allowing just three walks. Gabe pitched six innings and Maruna completed the last two. On the offensive end senior All-American Luke Vonderhaar (New Breman) went 3-5 with two home runs, knocked in five RBIs and three runs. Senior All-OAC outfielder Vincent Capolupo (Kenmore, N.Y./St. Joseph's Collegiate) also went 3-5, knocking in two RBIs and scoring three runs.

Scoring Plays

  • The Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning with RBI singles from junior infielder Nick Clark (Willowick/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) scoring Capolupo and senior Academic All-OAC utilityRyan Guggenheim (Solon) who scored Clark.
  • Capolupo extended the lead in the second inning with a two-run homer to right that scored Nick Stoltz.
  • Guggenheim doubled to left scoring Vonderhaar.
  • Stoltz followed with a sacrifice fly that scored senior Alexis Castillo (Tequesta, Fla./ Jupiter Christian School) who went 4-5 in the game.
  • In the fourth inning, Vonderhaar hit his first dinger which was a three-run shot to center.
  • In the eighth inning, Vonderhaar hit a two-run homer to left to extend the BW lead to 11-0 and force a run rule at the end of the inning.

On the Mound

  • Gabe pitched six no-hit innings while striking out eight on 71 pitches and picking up his win of the year.
  • Maruna closed out the final innings giving up no hits and striking out four on 34 pitches. 

Game 2 was highlighted by senior catcher JT Mazula (Pittsburgh, Pa./ North Hills) who went 2-3 with a bases clearing double in the seventh to give the Yellow Jackets a 7-6 lead. Senior catcher DJ Doria (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier) hit a pitch home run.

Scoring Plays

  • Vonderhaar continued his hot day at the plate with an RBI single scoring Capolupo.
  • The Colonels got their first hits and runs on the day with a two-run homer by Karson Thompson and a solo homer by Will Cline.
  • Centre extended their lead in the second inning with two RBI doubles as they stormed out to a 5-1 lead.
  • BW cut into the lead in the third with a Castillo RBI single that scored Mazula.
  • In the fourth inning Doria got a pinch-hit opportunity and made the most of it with a homer to left. Later in the inning sophomore infielder Sean Kolenich (Parma/St. Edward) knocked in Mazula on a sac fly.
  • The Colonels got a run back in the fourth on a double steal.
  • In the seventh Mazula cleared the bases with a double to center as the Yellow Jackets took a 7-6 lead.
  • Centre responded in the bottom of the seventh to tie things up at 7-7.
  • BW regained the lead in the eight on a Castillo RBI single that scored Clark. Sophomore first basement Quinn McCoy (Steubenville) scored Vonderhaar on a fielder's choice.

On the Mound

  • Junior right-handed pitcher Dan Petrouskie (Seaford, N.Y./IMG Academy) pitched one inning, giving up four runs and striking out one.
  • Senior right-handed pitcher Garrett Miller (McMurray, Pa.) came in relief pitcher three and a third innings giving up three hits, two runs and striking out four.
  • Senior right-handed pitcher Matt Sabin (Mentor) pitched the final four and two-thirds innings allowing four hits, one run and striking out five.

The Yellow Jackets close out the weekend with one more game against the Colonels on Sunday, February 19 at 12:00 p.m. on the Gary Wright Field inside Fishman Park.
