Patience Pays: W&J walks, hits way past La Roche

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College baseball team racked up 10 hits and walked 18 times in a 13-7 victory over the La Roche Redhawks Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference game at Ross Memorial Park. 

After a quick start in last nights bout with Pitt-Greenburg, both sides tonight got off to a hot start as well as the Presidents managed to be the first to add a run to the scoreboard thanks to a rip down the right field line by Scout Zaas (Powell, Ohio / Wellington School) to score Jacob LaDuca (Clarence, N.Y. / Canisius) making the score 1-0 Presidents after one inning.

La Roche tallied six runs on four hits in the top of the second inning. The big hit of the inning came from Nathan Stutz, who slugged a three-run home run for La Roche, pushed the lead to 6-1. 

The Presidents would tally a run apiece in the bottom of the second and bottom of the third innings to trim the deficit to 6-3. W&J scored three times in the fourth inning, as they tied the score at 6-6 on a two-run single by Joe Lehner (Painesville, Ohio/Lake Catholic). LaDuca put the Presidents ahead for good with a RBI single in the fifth. Zaas followed with a two-run double to left center to stretch the lead to 9-6. 

W&J would add three more runs in the sixth and another in the seventh to push the lead to 13-6. La Roche scored once in the eighth to close out the scoring. 

The Presidents scored in seven of the eight innings they batted. W&J has scored double-digit runs in three of its five games this season.

Logan Scheider (McDonald, Pa. / West Allegheny) walked five times on the day and officially finished the day 0-for-0 at the plate. who went 0-0 on the night with five total walks making that 10 on the season for the captain. Scheider has walked 10 times this season and has an on-base percentage of .722. He has a 55.5 percent walk rate on the season with 18 total plate appearances.

Nate Nolan (McDonald, Pa. / West Allegheny) earned his first win of the season and his collegiate career after posting a scoreless fifth inning. Another freshman arm, Chase Perry (Ponte Vedra, Fla. / Nease) also had a great day on the mound for the Presidents, as he pitched two scoreless innings for the Red & Black. He was the only pitcher to toss multiple innings for W&J Wednesday.

Zaas headlined the Presidents in the hit category with going 3-for-6 on the night with four RBI. Laduca backed Zaas with two hits going 2-for-5 while Lehner, Tyler Horvat (Irwin, Pa. / Penn-Trafford), Evan Sante (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Plum), Nolan Lutz (McDonald, Pa. / South Fayette), and John Klein (Vienna, Va. / Madison) would all register a hit on the night.

The Presidents have their first doubleheader of the season this weekend as they will travel to Case Western Reserve for a pair of non-conference games with the Spartans on Saturday, Mar. 4. Weather permitting, the first game will start at 12 p.m. in Cleveland, Ohio.
