Winning streak ends for No. 1 Salisbury Baseball against No. 25 JHU

SALISBURY, Md. – The top-ranked Salisbury University baseball team saw its season-opening winning streak end at eight, falling to the 25th-ranked Johns Hopkins Blue Jays, 23-4, on Sunday afternoon at Donnie Williams Sea Gull Baseball Stadium.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Blue Jays struck early and often in the top of the first inning. Isaiah Winikur led off with a double and scored on a Matthew Cooper single. With two out and Cooper at second after a steal, Dillon Souvignier dropped a base hit into right to score Cooper and make it 2-0.
  • After a walk, Jimmy Stevens doubled home two more runs, and Tripp Myers made it a five-spot with an RBI single to put JHU on top 5-0.
  • In the third, Souvignier led off with a double, then three batters later Myers unleashed a line drive two-run homer to right to make it 7-0. Cooper then tagged a solo homer to left in the fourth to boost the Blue Jay lead to 8-0.
  • Winikur tripled home a pair of runs in the fifth to make it 10-0, then in the sixth Caleb Cyr tagged a three-run homer to left, setting up a six-run frame that made it 16-0.
  • Jack Vahle went yard for three runs in the eighth to boost the lead to 19-0, and Lukas Geer's grand slam in the ninth made it 23-0.
  • The Sea Gulls broke up the shutout in the bottom of the ninth. Connor Wootten and Kevin Dall worked back-to-back walks, then Zach Geesaman hit a grounder that the shortstop threw away, allowing Wootten to score to make it 23-1.
  • Later in the ninth Andrew Kell tripled home a pair of runs, and Mickey Haynes hit into an RBI groundout to give the game its final 23-4 margin.

SALISBURY GAME NOTES

  • Kavi Caster finished 2-for-3 with the Sea Gulls' only multi-hit game of the day.
  • Scott Cameron doubled and went 1-for-2.
  • Andrew Kell batted 1-for-2 with a triple, run and two RBIs.
  • Jackson Balzan (2-1) took his first loss of the season after allowing seven runs (six earned) on seven hits in 2.2 innings.

JOHNS HOPKINS GAME NOTES

  • Isaiah Winikur set the tone at the top of the lineup for the Blue Jays, going 3-for-5 with a double, triple, two runs and three RBIs.
  • Matthew Cooper homered and finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored.
  • Caleb Cyr, Tripp Myers, Jack Vahle and Lukas Geer also went yard to account for JHU's five homers on the day.
  • Gabriel Romano (2-0) spun six innings of scoreless five-hit ball for his second win of the year, walking two and striking out one on 74 pitches.

UP NEXT

  • The Sea Gulls will host a midweek matchup against Delmarva Peninsula rivals Washington College on Wednesday afternoon.
  • First pitch from Williams Stadium is slated for 2:30 p.m. with coverage on the Sea Gull Sports Network (SGSN) beginning at 2:15 p.m.
