Hampden-Sydney Falls At Greensboro (NC) 13-12 In 10 Innings

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Senior team captain Ryan Boyce (Suffolk) and sophomore Christian Chambers (Midlothian) each hit home runs, but Hampden-Sydney College dropped a 13-12 non-conference baseball road decision at Greensboro (NC) College in 10 innings on Tuesday at Truist Point Stadium in Greensboro, North Carolina. Freshman Jake Genzler (Virginia Beach) took the pitching setback for the visiting Tigers (6-5) against the host Pride (6-6) in the extra-inning game.

H-SC scored 12 runs on 14 hits with one error … scoring one run each in the first, second and fifth innings, three runs each in the sixth and seventh, one in the ninth and two runs in the 10th. GC scored 13 runs on 13 hits with no errors … scoring one run in the first inning, four in the second, one in third, three in the fifth, one in the eighth and three runs in the 10th.

In the first, sophomore Jaxon Masterson (Raleigh, NC) (2-5, RBI) doubled to right field, stole third base and scored on a ground ball RBI off the bat of Boyce (2-4, 3 RBIs). In the second, freshman Mason Jablonski (Franklin, TN) reached base via a passed ball on a strikeout, advanced to second on another passed ball, stole third and later crossed the plate during a steal of second base by classmate Greer Farr (Southern Shores, NC) (3-4, RBI), who had walked. In the fifth, senior team captain Jay Beavers (Alexandria) (2-3, 2 RBIs) singled and later scored on an RBI single by Masterson.

In the sixth, senior Ethan Currin (Toano) (1-6) singled to open the frame and scored on a one-out double to right center field by Farr that moved freshman Jacob Miller-Bopp (Barhamsville) (1-4, RBI), who had walked, to third base. Miller-Bopp and Farr each crossed the plate on a two-run double by Beavers. In the seventh, Boyce singled with one out, stole second with two outs, and scored on a run-scoring single by Miller-Bopp. Chambers then followed with his first home run of the season, a two-run shot that was the fifth homer of his career.

In the ninth, Chambers singled with one out and later crossed the plate via an RBI sacrifice fly to left field by junior Tillman Butler (Culpeper) (RBI). In the 10th, Masterson walked to begin the at-bat ahead of Boyce and his second home run this season, another two-run blast, and the third homer of his career.

Senior Justin Woodall (Mechanicsville) started on the mound for the Tigers and pitched the first 1.0-plus inning, allowing four hits and four runs, all earned, with no strikeouts and no walks. The Garnet & Grey used eight pitchers on the day, including senior Owen Tappy (Charlotte, NC), who tossed 3.0 innings and allowed three hits and two runs, one earned, with three strikeouts and no walks. Junior Ryan Portes (Midlothian) pitched 2.0 scoreless innings, yielding one hit with one strikeout and one walk. Senior Tymothy Hart (Powhatan) tossed 1.1 scoreless innings, allowing no hits with one strikeout and no walks. Genzler (0-1) went two-thirds of an inning, yielding one hit and three runs, all earned, with one strikeout and one walk.

H-SC will continue its spring break trip with a non-conference game at North Carolina Wesleyan on Wednesday, March 8, at 3:30 p.m. in Rocky Mount, North Carolina.
