THE BASICS:

- Records: MIT (2-4); Trinity College (2-2)

- Score: MIT 8, Trinity College 8

- Location: Hartford, Conn. (Murren Family Field)

- The Lead: Led by timely extra-base hits and a three-inning, seven-strikeout relief performance from first-year pitcher Matthew Spenner (Darien, Conn.), the MIT baseball team defeated Trinity College by an 8-6 final on Sunday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- The Bantams got out to an early 3-0 lead with a single run in the first and two more in the third behind a pair of RBI triples in the bottom of the third from Tyler Bernstein and Sean Meth. MIT answered with a four-run fourth inning as first-year Owen Malone (Portsmouth, R.I.) hit a three-run homer and junior Teddy Schoenfeld (Boulder, Colo.) scored on a fielder's choice to put the Engineers up 4-3.

- The one-run lead was short-lived though as Trinity scored in the bottom of the fourth when William Sawyer walked with one out, advanced on a hit pitch and a wild pitch and then scored on an RBI groundout by Bernstein.

- A three-hit, two-run bottom of the sixth gave Trinity the lead back at 6-4 as they held MIT to just one hit in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings combined. The top of the eighth was a different story though as the Engineers put up another four-run frame and chased two Trinity pitchers from the game as well. After a walk and back-to-back singles, first-year Luke Fitzgerald (South Burlington, Vt.) doubled down the right field line and went to third on an error to clear the bases and make it 7-6 MIT. Fitzgerald came around on an RBI-groundout by first-year Zev Moore (Jerusalem, Israel) for the eighth MIT run.

- Spenner struck out the side in the bottom of the eighth and two each in both the seventh and ninth innings to secure the road victory for the Engineers.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Malone led MIT with two hits and three runs batted in, while first-year Eitan Moore (Jerusalem, Israel) had two hits and two runs scored. Junior Tyler Godfrey (Rowley, Mass.) also scored twice and drew three walks as the Bantams walked seven Engineers on the afternoon.

- Meth was the lone Bantam with multiple hits as he went 3-for-4 with two runs batted in.

- Spenner improved to 1-1 on the season as he went three innings with three hits allowed, no walks and seven strikeouts. Jonathan Link was one of six pitchers for Trinity in the game as he took the loss to fall to 0-1 after allowing two hits and two runs without recording an out.
