Strong starting pitching guides W&J to Florida sweep of Keuka

DAVENPORT, Fla. -- The Washington & Jefferson College baseball team used a pair of strong pitching efforts to sweep Keuka College Monday afternoon in Spring Break action at the RussMatt Invitational in the Northeast Regional Park Complex.

The sweep improves W&J to 9-3 overall (2-0 PAC). Keuka drops to 1-4 overall. 

Game One - W&J 4, Keuka 0 

After being shutout yesterday to open Spring Break action, the Presidents got on the board early Monday as they scored in the top of the second inning. W&J's Nolan Lutz (McDonald, Pa. / South Fayette) tripled to set up the Presidents first score on the day when Joe Lehner (Painesville, Ohio / Lake Catholic) produced a RBI groundout. 

The Presidents added to their lead in the fourth when a Dan Beistel (Canfield, Ohio / Canfield) sac fly drove in Scout Zaas(Powell, Ohio / Wellington School), who previously doubled to put a runner in scoring position. 

W&J tacked on two insurance runs in the top of the seventh when Jacob LaDuca (Clarence, N.Y. / Canisius) and Tyler Horvat (Irwin, Pa. / Penn-Trafford) scored off of an Evan Sante (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Plum) single to the left side to extend the lead to 4-0. 

One of the highlights for the Presidents was the effort from sophomore pitcher Ethan Marszalek (Katy, Texas/Seven Lakes), who carried a no-hitter into the sixth innings. 

Marszalek allowed two hits and no runs in six-plus innings. He finished with seven strikeouts and just one walk. Dante DiMatteo (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Fox Chapel) came in for Marszelek in the bottom of the seventh and closed the door. DiMatteo finished things off with three straight strikeouts to secure the win.

Nolan Lutz (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette) led the Presidents with two hits.

 

Game Two - W&J 12, Keuka 2 

The Presidents scored 12 runs on nine hits in game two. They took advantage of five errors and and five hit batters from Keuka. 

W&J led 4-0 after four innings before adding an eight-spot in the fifth to take a 12-0 advantage. Tyler Horvat (Irwin, Pa./Penn Trafford) recorded an RBI single in both the fourth and fifth innings. Sante smacked a two-run single through the left side as part of a big fifth inning for W&J.

Later in the frame, Trevor Dean (San Diego, Calif./Rancho Bernardo) recorded a two-run double in the fifth before Ryan Ross (Fredericktown, Pa./Beth Center) capped off the scoring for the Presidents with his first career RBI. 

Tyler Horvat led the Presidents with three hits and two RBI in game two. Nate Nolan (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny) tossed four scoreless innings to pick up his first collegiate victory. 

On Deck: On Tuesday morning, W&J will face the No. 3 ranked team in the nation in Wisconsin-Stevens Point at the Northeast Regional Park Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 9:30 a.m.
