HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Sophomore Christian Chambers (Midlothian) had two hits and three RBIs, while classmate Christian Lancaster (Danville) had two hits and two RBIs, but Hampden-Sydney College dropped a 12-11 non-conference baseball decision on the road at Mary Baldwin University on Thursday afternoon in Staunton. Freshman Jake Genzler (Virginia Beach) took the pitching setback in late relief for the visiting Tigers (10-9) against the host Fighting Squirrels (4-12).

H-SC scored 11 runs on nine hits with no errors … scoring five runs in the first inning, four runs in the fifth and two runs in the seventh. MBU scored 12 runs on 12 hits with four errors … scoring one run in the first inning, four runs in the fourth, one run each in the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth innings, and three runs in the ninth.

In the first, sophomore Grayson Harris (Moseley) (2-5) reached base on a fielding error to open the contest, advanced to second base when sophomore Jaxon Masterson (Raleigh, NC) (RBI) drew a walk, and moved to third when senior captain Ryan Boyce (Suffolk) (RBI) reached on a fielder's choice. Boyce then stole second base, and a throwing error by the catcher allowed Harris to score and Boyce to advance to third base. Chambers (2-4, 3 RBIs) followed with an RBI double to plate Boyce, and Chambers crossed the plate when freshman Jacob Miller-Bopp (Barhamsville) (1-4, 2 RBIs) added a run-scoring single. Lancaster (2-3, 2 RBIs) added a two-out RBI single to plate Miller-Bopp, and moved to second on another error, before scoring on an RBI single by junior Lucas Burnette (Hurt) (1-3, RBI) to provide an early 5-0 advantage.

In the fifth, junior Tillman Butler (Culpeper) (1-5) tripled to begin the at-bat, and scored when Lancaster followed with an RBI single. After Burnette was hit by a pitch, both runners advanced via a sacrifice bunt by freshman Jack Wilson (Petersburg), and the bases were loaded with one out following a walk to Harris. Ensuing walks to Masterson and Boyce allowed both Lancaster and Burnette to cross the plate, and a ground ball RBI by Chambers plated Harris to make it a 9-5 lead for the Tigers.

In the seventh, Masterson reached on a fielder's choice and stole second base ahead of a walk to Boyce, and scored on a run-scoring single by Chambers with one out, as Boyce advanced to third. A ground ball RBI off the bat of Miller-Bopp plated Boyce to give the Garnet & Grey an 11-7 advantage.

Freshman Jackson Barnett (Ashland) started on the mound and tossed the first 3.2 innings, allowing five hits and five runs, all earned, with two strikeouts and no walks.
