Hampden-Sydney Falls On The Road At No. 11 Lynchburg 7-4

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Senior captain Jay Beavers (Alexandria) had two hits and three RBIs, but Hampden-Sydney College dropped a 7-4 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) baseball decision on the road at nationally-ranked No. 11 the University of Lynchburg on Tuesday in Lynchburg. Freshman Sterling Austin (Petersburg) took the pitching setback for the visiting Tigers (10-12, 4-4) against the host Hornets (17-3, 7-1).

H-SC scored four runs on six hits with no errors … scoring one run in the fifth inning and three runs in the sixth. Lynchburg scored seven runs on 12 hits with one error … scoring three runs in the first inning and four runs in the fourth.

In the fifth, sophomore Christian Lancaster (Danville) (1-4, RBI) doubled to left center field to begin the at-bat, and scored on a one-out RBI single to left field by Beavers (2-4, 3 RBIs) to make it a 7-1 contest.

In the sixth, sophomore Jaxon Masterson (Raleigh, NC) was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on a one-out walk to classmate Christian Chambers (Midlothian) and moved to third on a single through the left side by freshman Jacob Miller-Bopp (Barhamsville) (1-4) to load the bases. Masterson crossed the plate on an RBI ground ball off the bat of Lancaster, and following a walk to junior Lucas Burnette (Hurt) (1-3), both Chambers and Miller-Bopp crossed the plate on two-out, two-run single up the middle by Beavers to provide for the final 7-4 margin.

Austin (0-2) started on the mound for the Tigers and pitched the first 1.2 innings, allowing three hits and three runs, all earned, with two strikeouts and three walks. Junior Ryan Portes (Midlothian) tossed the next 1.2 innings, yielding three hits and two runs, both earned, with no strikeouts and two walks. Freshman Jackson Barnett (Ashland) recorded one out, allowing two hits and two runs, both earned, with no strikeouts and no walks. Classmate Colton Harris (Stuarts Draft) pitched 3.1 scoreless innings, scattering four hits with two strikeouts and no walks. Senior Tymothy Hart (Powhatan) tossed the final scoreless and hitless inning with two strikeouts and no walks.

H-SC returns home to welcome ODAC opponent Guilford (NC) College on Saturday, April 1, for a conference doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. on Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium. It will also be the Second Annual H-SC Baseball Homecoming/Reunion sponsored by the Big Hitters Club and the Office of Alumni and Parent Engagement.
