Buena Vista Moves to 4-0 in A-R-C with DH Sweep on Tuesday

LINCOLN, Neb. (March 28, 2023) - The Buena Vista University baseball team continued American Rivers Conference play with a pair of road games against Nebraska Wesleyan University on Tuesday afternoon. They earned the double header sweep winning the first game 7-4 and the second game 9-4. The wins improve the Beavers to 13-4 (4-0 A-R-C).

 

GAME 1

Both teams remained deadlocked heading into the bottom half of third before an RBI single to center gave Wesleyan an early 1-0 advantage. BVU would not let the advantage last long. The Beavers began the fourth by rattling off four straight hits. The sequence was concluded with a sacrifice fly from Grant Oseka giving the Beavers a 2-1 lead. They would add one again in the fifth extending the lead to 3-1 before Wesleyan struck back with a run-scoring double in the sixth. Just when it looked like Wesleyan might be coming back, the Beaver lineup found their grove, rattling off four runs in the next two innings. Wesleyan headed into the ninth trailing 7-2. The Prairie Wolves scored two runs in an attempt to rally, but Brayden Polzein, was able to get the Beavers out of the jam.

BVU finished with seven runs on 16 hits.  Evan Taylor led the offensive effort with four hits in five at-bats while driving in and scoring a pair of runs. Logan Mueller recorded the only extra-base hit with a double in the ninth inning.

Mason Gehling was credited with the win after battling through five innings where he allowed no earned runs on two hits while striking out four. 

 

GAME 2

BVU again fell behind early, as NWU plated a pair in the the first inning, but the Beavers lineup continued what they've done all season by picking up the staff. Over the next seven innings, they rattled off nine unanswered runs. Wesleyan would not answer until the ninth inning. They scored two runs, but the effort was not nearly enough as BVU prevailed 9-4. 

Nolan Faber earned the win on the mound. After allowing two runs in the first, the sophomore threw four straight scoreless innings. Overall on the day, Faber allowed two runs on five hits across five innings. Peyton Thomas took over in relief, throwing a pair of scoreless innings. Landon Howard was next with a scoreless inning of his own before Spencer Holmes took over in the ninth to finish it off for the Beavers. 

BVU finished with nine runs on 15 hits. Jordan Mathewson led the effort by scoring two runs on three hits. Mathewson was one of five Beaver hitters to record multi-hit games.

 

NEXT UP: BVU will head to Dubuque on Friday, March 31, and begin a three-game road series against Loras College. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
