Early offense jumpstarts Presidents in sweep at Saint Vincent

LATROBE, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College baseball team rode a pair of early leads to earn a sweep of Saint Vincent College Wednesday afternoon in a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader at Bearcat Ballfield in Westmoreland County. 

The sweep improves the Presidents to 4-0 in conference play and 13-5 overall. The pair of setbacks drops the Bearcats to 1-3 in PAC tilts and 7-12 overall. 

Game One – W&J 10, Saint Vincent 1
 
Fueled by a balanced offensive effort, the Presidents scored early and often in the game one win over the Bearcats. W&J posted 10 runs on 15 hits in the opener. 
 
Tyler Horvat (Irwin, Pa./Penn Trafford) was a catalyst for the Presidents, as the senior finished with three hits in game one. Horvat led off the game with a double and scored on an RBI groundout by Evan Sante(Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum). 
 
W&J tacked on two more runs in the second inning. Sam Schuster (Fairport Harbor, Ohio / Fairport Harding) singled home Nolan Lutz(McDonald, Pa. / South Fayette), who had led off the frame with a double. Connor Helm (Murrysville, Pa. / Franklin Regional) singled to put runners on the corners and Horvat followed with an RBI single to score Schuster. 
 
The Presidents added two more runs onto its lead in the fifth inning to stretch its lead to 5-0. W&J brought in runs on a sac fly by Schuster and an RBI double by Scheider. 
 
W&J was able to get to Saint Vincent starter Casey Jones, who entered the day ranking second in the PAC in earned-run average. Jones entered the contest with a 1.61 ERA but the Presidents touched him up for five earned runs on 11 hits over five innings. 
 
Scheider then slugged a three-run home run in the seventh inning. The Scheider blast made it 8-0. W&J then tacked on two more runs in the ninth, as a Joe Lehner (Painesville, Ohio / Lake Catholic) groundout and Brody Bartenstein (Corning, N.Y. / Corning-Painted Post) RBI single stretched it to 10-0. 
 
Saint Vincent broke up the shutout in the ninth inning with an RBI triple. 
 
Horvat finished with three hits while Lutz, Scheider and Helm registered two hits apiece. 
 
Ethan Marszalek (Katy, Texas/Seven Lakes) earned the victory to improve to 3-1. Marszalek allowed three hits over five scoreless innings. The sophomore struck out eight and walked two in the win. Shane Fox (Valencia, Pa./Mars Area) recorded two shutout innings out of the bullpen. 

Game Two – W&J 8, Saint Vincent 4
 
W&J once again jumped out to a fast start in game two. The Presidents scored three times in the top half of the first inning to claim the early advantage. Jacob LaDuca (Clarence, N.Y./Canisius) smacked a one-out double and eventually scored on a wild pitch with the bases loaded. Lutz made it 2-0 with a sac fly that plated Sante. Trevor Dean (San Diego, Calif. / Rancho Bernardo) made it 3-0 Presidents with a two-out RBI single through the left side. 
 
Saint Vincent tallied a run in the bottom of the second inning to trim the deficit to 3-1. W&J loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the fourth before settling for a run on a LaDuca sac fly that made it 4-1. 
 
The Bearcats tallied single runs in the fourth and sixth innings to close within a single run at 4-3. However, the potential tying run was stranded at third base. 
 
W&J gave itself some breathing room with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh. With one out, Lutz sent a pitch over the left field fence for a solo home run. Dean followed with a double and scored on an RBI single by Dan Beistel (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield. 
 
The Red and Black tallied single runs in the eighth and ninth innings as it walked away with the 8-4 victory. 
 
Dean produced a three-hit effort to lead the W&J offense in game two. Horvat finished with a pair of hits and picked up the victory on the mound. Horvat worked the first two innings as W&J used six different pitchers in the game two win. Horvat is now 5-2 this season. 
 
 
On Deck: W&J returns to action Saturday, April 1 when it hosts Grove City College for a league doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
