HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – Sophomore Jaxon Masterson (Raleigh, NC) collected six hits and four RBIs on the day, while sophomore Grayson Harris (Moseley) had seven hits, including a triple and four doubles, to lead Hampden-Sydney College to a sweep of an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) baseball home doubleheader past Guilford (NC) College on Sunday afternoon on Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium. Senior Owen Tappy (Charlotte, NC) gained the pitching victory in the 7-2 win in the opener, while sophomore Gavin Gregory (Suffolk) earned the mound triumph in the 9-3 win in the nightcap for the host Tigers (12-12, 6-4) against the visiting Quakers (10-14-1, 2-9-1).

In game one, H-SC scored seven runs on 10 hits with one error … scoring two runs in the first inning, one run in the second and four runs in the seventh. GC scored two runs on nine hits with one error … scoring one run in the fifth inning and one run in the ninth.

In the first, Harris (3-5) led off with a triple to the wall in right center field and scored when Masterson (3-4, 3 RBIs) followed with an RBI single into center field. Masterson later crossed the plate courtesy of a sacrifice fly to center field off the bat of freshman Jacob Miller-Bopp (Barhamsville) (RBI) for the early 2-0 advantage.

In the second, senior captain Jay Beavers (Alexandria) (1-4) opened with a double into the left field corner, and scored on a two-out, RBI single to center field by Masterson to make it 3-0.

In the seventh, junior Trent Jones (Virginia Beach) (1-3) singled up the middle to lead-off and Harris followed with a double down the left field line. Jones scored on an RBI ground ball by Masterson, and Harris scored when senior captain Ryan Boyce (Suffolk) reached on a throwing error, advancing to second base on the play, and on to third on another ground ball out. Following a walk to Miller-Bopp, both he and Boyce were ultimately successful on steal attempts—Boyce's resulting in another run, and Miller-Bopp then crossed the plate on a two-out RBI double to left center field by sophomore Christian Lancaster (Danville) (1-4, RBI) for a 7-1 advantage.

Tappy (3-1) started for the Tigers and pitched the first 8.0 innings, scattering six hits and one run, earned, with three strikeouts and one walk. Senior Tymothy Hart (Powhatan) tossed the final inning, yielding three hits and one run, earned, with one strikeout and no walks.

In game two, H-SC scored nine runs on 13 hits with one error … scoring two runs in the first inning, two runs in the third, three runs in the fifth, one run in the sixth and one run in the eighth. GC scored three runs on seven hits with two errors … scoring two runs in the third inning and one run in the eighth.

In the first, Harris (4-5) led off with a double down the right field line and scored on an RBI single to center field by Masterson (3-4, RBI), who also crossed the plate when the centerfielder misplayed the ball and it rolled to the fence, for an early 2-0 advantage.

In the third, Harris once-again led off and this time reached base on a single to left field, before Masterson was hit by a pitch, and both runners advanced a base courtesy of a sacrifice bunt by Boyce (2 RBIs). Sophomore Christian Chambers (Midlothian) (1-4, 2 RBIs) then followed with a two-run single into the right field corner to make it a 4-2 contest.

In the fifth, Chambers and Miller-Bopp (1-4) each drew one-out walks, and Chambers scored on an RBI single to right center field by Lancaster (2-4, RBI). Miller-Bopp then advanced to third base on a fly-ball out by sophomore Johnny Oates II (Chester), and both he and Lancaster crossed the plate on a clutch two-run double to left center field by Beavers (2-2, 2 RBIs) with two outs for a 7-2 advantage. Oates was seeing his first action of the season after battling back from an injury suffered last fall.

In the sixth, Harris again led off, this time with a chopper down the left field line for another double, moved to third base on a single to right field by Masterson, and scored on a fielder's choice RBI off the bat of Boyce to make it an 8-2 ballgame. Boyce would add his team-leading 21st stolen base during the at-bat, as well, and is now 21-22 on the season.

In the eighth, Harris led off yet again and promptly smacked a double to right center field, advanced to third base when Masterson singled to right field, and scored via a sacrifice fly RBI to right field by Boyce to provide for the final margin of victory and a sweep of the day's two games for the Garnet & Grey.

Senior Justin Woodall (Mechanicsville) started and pitched the first 3.0 innings, scattering three hits and two runs, both earned, with three strikeouts and three walks. Gregory (4-0) followed with the final 6.0 innings, allowing just four hits and one run, earned, with a season-high eight strikeouts and one walk.

H-SC remains at home this week for four games, beginning with a non-conference contest against Mary Baldwin University on Tuesday, April 4, at 3:30 p.m. at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium.
