More news about: WPI

Northboro --- Five runs each in the first, second, and third innings led visiting MIT to a 15-3 win over WPI at the New England Baseball Complex on Tuesday afternoon. The Worcester Engineers dip to 13-16, 2-8 in NEWMAC play, while the Cambridge Engineers improve to 10-14, 5-5 NEWMAC.

For MIT, Graham Cartwright (La Jolla, CA) finished 3-for-3 with three runs and six RBI including a double and homerun. Teddy Schoenfeld (Boulder, CO), Tyler Godfrey (Rowley, MA), and Eitan Moore (Jerusalem, Israel) all added three-hit games with Jake Sonandres (Torrance, CA) driving in three runs, and Lawrence Tang (Hopkinton, MA) adding two.

MIT's Karl Meyer (Indianapolis, IN) improved to 3-2 overall with a complete game win. He threw all seven innings, allowing 3 runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts.

WPI was paced by two hits and an RBI from Jacob Hand (Niskayuna, NY), while Adam Tedesco (Middlebury, CT) drove in a pair of runs.  The trio of Henry Sniezek (Adams, MA), Gavin Maloney (West Boylston) and Jack Twarog (Franklin, NH) combined for four scoreless innings of relief for the Crimson and Gray.

MIT wasted no time, putting up five runs in the top of the first inning. Schoenfeld started the game with an infield single, while Godfrey reached on an error. Cartwright drove both in with a single to left and later scored on a Jake Sonandres (Torrance, CA) groundout. A two-out single from Kennan Gumbs (New York, NY) then set up Tang's first homerun of a year, a two-run blast to center, pushing the score to 5-0.

Hand got one back for WPI in the bottom of the inning, leading off with a solo homerun, his third of the season, making it 5-1.

Another five-run inning followed for MIT in the top of the second, as the visitors capitalized on five hits and three errors to go up 10-1. Eitan Moore, Schoenfeld, Godfrey, and Kyle Sonandres (Torrance, CA) opened the frame with four-straight singles with Moore scoring on a throwing error and Schoenfeld on a failed pickoff attempt. Then, with runners on first and second, Cartwright had the big blast of the inning, as his team-high and league-high tying eighth homerun of the season made it a nine-run MIT lead.

In the top of the third, six more hits from the Cambridge squad led to another five-run inning as MIT extended its advantage. Moore and Schoenfeld doubled to start the frame, followed by a single from Godfrey making it 12-1. After a fly-out, Cartwright added another RBI on a double, before Kyle Sonandres's third HR of the year made it 15-1.

MIT threatened again in the top of the fifth loading the bases with one out before WPI reliever Henry Sniezek (Adams, MA) struck out the final two batters of the frame to get out of trouble.

WPI scored a pair in the bottom of the seventh, but the visitors wrapped up the win. Russell Chase (North Hero, VT) walked and Liam Keblin (Newton, MA) singled before a two-out double from Tesesco scored both. Meyer got the last batter of the frame, however, as MIT closed out the mercy-rule-shortened game.

WPI has a non-conference match-up slated for Thursday at 3:30pm at Roger Williams, while MIT begins a three-game NEWMAC series with Babson on Friday at home at 3:30pm.
