Brock and Hatton Hit Home Runs, Polars Topple UW-Stout 8-2

St. Paul, MN - The Polars baseball team faced off with UW-Stout in the first contest of the season and came out on top 8-2.

Crown got the scoring started in the top half of the first inning when Rhys Dewick launched one deep to left field for a double, driving in Mason Brock to go ahead 1-0. Two hits and three strikeouts was the bottom half of the inning. After a one, two, three top half of the 2nd inning Aidan Volk-Specht struck out one and then forced two pop-ups to retire the bottom half. 

The third inning was the big one for Crown as two runners reached on an error and a base hit. Howie Hatton then drove one out of the park to right center over the scoreboard for his first home run of the season and drove in one other. With a 3-0 lead the Polars scored another 3 runs after hits from Ethan HabetlerMatthew Shaugabay, and Tristen Ciarlo moving the score to 6-0. A Mason Brock solo home run to dead center stretched the lead to 7-0 and Crown went on to get the victory 8-2.

When asked his thoughts on the first win of the season Head Coach Colt Sedbrook said,"We just had the opportunity to glorify the Lord for the gifts that He has given us, our concentration was there from pitch to pitch."

Volk-Specht started on the mound for the Polars and pitched 2 innings allowing only 2 hits, no runs, and struck out 4 batters. Ryan Vondracek got the win in the contest as he pitched 2 innings and totaled 5 strikeouts only allowing 1 earned run. Tristan CampJefferson BarmoyDanny GallardoJacob Van Dam, and Drew Girtz all pitched 1 inning each and totaled a combined 7 strikeouts. "The pitching staff did a phenomenal job today, each getting their opportunity to contribute," said Head Coach Colt Sedbrook.

Mason Brock totaled 4 hits in 5 at bats and totaled 3 runs and 2 RBIs including a solo home run. Howie Hatton went 2-4 on the day with a walk and 2 RBIs. Matthew Shaugabay went 3-4 with a double and a walk. The Polars totaled 8 runs on 13 hits.

Crown moves to 1-0 on the season and will next head to Florida for the Tuscon Invitational starting on March 9th with a matchup with Carthage College.
