No. 2 Salisbury Baseball splits pair with Oswego State; Anderson walks off in opener

SALISBURY, Md. – The second-ranked Salisbury University baseball team split a pair of tight games with the Oswego State Lakers on a sun-splashed Sunday afternoon at Donnie Williams Sea Gull Baseball Stadium. The Sea Gulls took Game 1, 6-5 on a walk-off RBI single by Ben Anderson in the bottom of the 13th. The Lakers rebounded to take Game 2, 4-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 1

  • The Lakers struck early thanks in part to the morning sunshine. CJ McCarthy led off the first inning with a shallow flyball that got lost in the sun and landed for a double. Daniel Winchester followed by singling him home but was soon thrown out trying to take second on a wild pitch. After a strikeout and two straight singles, Owen Parliament doubled to left to score one and make it 2-0.
  • The Sea Gulls benefited from the early sun twice in the second. Dylan Winebrenner walked to lead off and promptly stole second. Two batters later Andrew Kell hit a line drive to center that got by a blinded Brian Brezosky for an RBI triple. Adam Tommer then beat out an infield single to score Kell and tie the game.
  • Two batters later, Kyle Brex hit a flyball to left center that Brezosky again lost in the sun, gifting Brex the Sea Gulls' second RBI triple of the inning to put SU on top 3-2.
  • OSU drew even in the third as Trishawn Featherstone rocked a solo home run to center to knot it up at 3-3. In the fourth, Parliament teed off for his own solo dinger to left to put the Lakers ahead 4-3.
  • The Lakers tacked on another with two out in the fifth. Jelani Hamer was plunked and stole second, then Parliament legislated one through the left side for an RBI single to make it 5-3.
  • Salisbury drew even with a run each in the home fifth and sixth. In the fifth, Winebrenner singled with one out and stole second. Tommer then dunked a two-out single into center to bring Winebrenner home to make it 5-4.
  • In the sixth, Alex Seidleck hit a one-out popup down the right field line that once again got lost in the sun and fell in for a double. Two batters later Ben Anderson lashed an RBI single to right to tie it at 5-5.
  • The teams traded goose eggs through the next three innings and the game headed to extras. The Lakers and Sea Gulls both threatened but both stranded two men on base in the 10th inning.
  • Salisbury had a prime chance to win the game in the 11th, putting men on the corners with one out, but Anderson's would-be squeeze bunt went straight to OSU pitcher Larry Citrola, who flipped home to the catcher for the tag. Citrola then struck out Winebrenner with men on first and second, moving the game into the 12th.
  • In the bottom of the 13th, Brex pushed a perfect bunt up the third base line for a one-out single. Trent Waire then drew a walk, and the runners moved up on a wild pitch. After Danny Sheeler was walked intentionally to load the bases, Anderson rocked a line drive over the left fielder's head for the walk-off single, bringing home Brex and setting off a wild Sea Gull celebration between first and second base.
