No. 4 Salisbury Baseball powers through VWU, 11-6

SALISBURY, Md. – The fourth-ranked Salisbury University baseball team stretched its winning streak to six games, taking care of the Virginia Wesleyan Marlins, 11-6, on Thursday afternoon at Perry Field.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Sea Gulls plated three runs in the top of the first inning. With the bases loaded and no out, Andrew Kell scored on a double play groundout. After a walk and a steal, Ben Anderson tagged an RBI single, then Danny Sheeler came home on a passed ball to make it 3-0 SU.
  • The Marlins got two back in the second on a two-run homer by Nick Sylvester that got it to 3-2.
  • Thomas Crandall went deep for a solo homer in the fifth to tie the game, then in the sixth Clay Clarke worked a bases-loaded walk to give the Marlins their first lead, 4-3.
  • Kell hit a game-tying home run to lead off the seventh, then with two out and a man on second Sheeler went deep for his own dinger, putting the Sea Gulls back ahead 6-4.
  • The teams traded two runs each in the eighth. SU got its pair on a Kyle Brex RBI single and a sac fly by Tim Petrucelli. VWU answered with a double steal that saw Crandall swipe home and a Micah Fox RBI double that made it 8-6 with the Sea Gulls on top.
  • In the ninth, the Sea Gulls put up another three-spot on RBI base knocks by Trent Waire and Kell, and Waire scored on an error by the catcher with the bases loaded that gave the game its final 11-6 margin.

SALISBURY GAME NOTES

  • Danny Sheeler finished 2-for-2 with his first home run of the season, two RBIs, three runs scored, two walks, and three stolen bases to lead the Sea Gull bats.
  • Andrew Kell homered for the fourth time in four games, ultimately going 2-for-3 with three walks, three runs, and two rib-eyes.
  • Ben Anderson went 2-for-4 with a double, run, and RBI.
  • Kyle Brex and Tim Petrucelli combined for two RBIs and a pair of runs.
  • Cole Williams (3-1) scooped up the win in relief, tossing an inning and a third scoreless with three walks and one strikeout.
  • Aidan Brinsfield lasted 5.2 innings in a no-decision, giving up four runs on nine hits with two walks and seven punchouts.
  • Shawn Rosemond tossed an inning and a third scoreless to finish off the game.

VA. WESLEYAN GAME NOTES

  • Nick Sylvester and Thomas Crandall each went yard for the Marlins.
  • Micah Fox finished 2-for-3 with a double, run, and RBI.
  • Matthew Weber (1-1) was saddled with the loss after giving up three runs in an inning of relief work.
  • Aaron Jackson started for VWU and lasted just 1.2 innings, giving up three runs on three walks and two hit batsmen.

UP NEXT

  • The Sea Gulls head up to Collegeville, Pa., for a Saturday doubleheader against Ursinus beginning at 12 p.m.
