Marietta beats Wittenberg 9-6 in BSN Sports Invitational finale

MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to beat Wittenberg University, 9-6, Sunday (Mar. 17) afternoon at Pioneer Park. The Pioneers are 7-8 on the season. Wittenberg falls to 6-8 overall.
 
Jones had a pinch hit single to lead off the bottom of the eighth. Cael Magill bunted Jones into scoring position. Alex Richter was hit by a pitch and Ben Kaplin singled to right scoring Jones with the winning run.
 
Richter stole third and Kaplin swiped second. Cooper Fiehrer followed with a two-run single through the right side of the infield for a 9-6 Pioneers lead.
 
Gabe Torres (2-0) shutout the Tigers over the last two innings for the win. Torres worked 2.0 innings with one walk and two strikeouts. Forrest Havanis started and worked 1.1 innings allowing three runs on four hits. Austin Ziance gave up one run on three hits in 4.2 innings of work. Jacob Rocky allowed two runs on two hits in 1.0 inning of relief.
 
Wittenberg scored three runs in the second inning. James MacAuley and Alex Nemunaitis each had RBI singles and Tommy Chilicki drove in a run with a ground out.
 
Jeremy Tonelli lined an RBI double down the left field line scoring Austin Amburgey in the bottom of the second to get the Pioneers on the board.
 
Marietta grabbed the lead with four runs in the fourth. Trent Valentine drove in two runs with a single through the right side of the infield. Kaplin put the Pioneers in front with a two-run single to right field.
 
Trailing 6-4, Wittenberg tied the game with two runs in the top of the seventh. Ben Seibert plated the first run with a single to left. Seibert later scored on an infield error by Marietta.
 
Austin Luther started on the mound and threw 5.0 innings and gave up five runs, three earned, on six hits with two walks and one strikeout. Mikey Eickhoff (2-2) took the loss allowing four runs on seven hits in 2.2 innings of work.
 
Kaplin finished 2-for-4 with three runs batted in and one run scored. Tonelli had a pair of doubles. Richter had two hits, including a double, while Cole Rieman had two hits and Valentine two RBI.
 
Marietta hosts Kenyon College for a single game on Wednesday (Mar. 20). First pitch is set for 5:00 p.m.
