Augustana scores early to down St. Olaf in Florida

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The St. Olaf College baseball team fell in an early hole and could not recover in a 7-2 loss to Augustana College on Friday afternoon at Lake Myrtle Sports Park.

St. Olaf (6-7) got a run in the top of the first before Augustana (12-3) scored in four of its first five innings at the plate to build a 7-1 lead after five innings on its way its seventh consecutive victory. The Vikings received votes in this week's D3baseball.com/NCBWA Top 25 poll.

Three Augustana pitchers held St. Olaf to five hits in the game, with five Oles picking up one hit apiece. Senior Joey Glampe drove in both of St. Olaf's runs in the loss to move into a tie for the team lead with 14 RBI in the 11 games he has played. Sophomore Breckin Hadley reached base three times, going 1-for-2 with a pair of walks.

St. Olaf's pitching staff limited an Augustana team averaging over 10 runs per game coming in to just eight hits in the game. Senior Derek Hansen and first year Carter Follman combined to keep the Vikings scoreless over the final three innings, with Hansen tossing scoreless innings in the sixth and seventh and Follman doing so in the eighth.

The Oles opened the scoring in the top of the first when senior Sam Lavin registered a one-out double, got to third on a passed ball, and scored on a ground ball off the bat of Glampe. Lavin's double was the only hit St. Olaf got off Augustana starter Adam Bendoraitis, who yielded the unearned run with three walks and four strikeouts over 6.0 innings of work.

The Vikings got the run back in the bottom of the first on a passed ball before taking the lead for good in the bottom of the second. After the first two batters of the inning were retired, a walk kept the inning alive and Augustana followed with back-to-back run-scoring hits.

Augustana tacked on two runs in each of the third and fifth innings to extend its lead to 7-1, with three of those four runs coming after the second out of the inning. The score remained 7-1 until Glampe collected his second RBI of the day with a two-out RBI single in the eighth. Three of the Oles' five hits in the game came in the top of the eighth.

St. Olaf takes on Union College at 3:30 p.m. CDT on Saturday, March 23 at Lake Myrtle Sports Park #7.
