Tornados Slug Their Way to Fourth Conference Series Win of 2024

BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College baseball team (16-10, 9-3 USA South) used 12 runs on 16 hits with two home runs to power past Methodist University (15-15, 7-5 USAS) on Sunday afternoon at Gil Coan Field.

Sunday's winning effort gives the Tornados four USA South series victories, as BC sits currently tied atop the conference standings at 9-3 with three USA South sets left to go in the 2024 regular season.

Colson Miller, who got the start at first base for the Tornados on Sunday, delivered in a big way with a 3-for-5 outing that included a solo home run and a RBI double. The home run marked the first of his Tornado career.

Kenny Pridmore also went 3-for-5 with an extra base hit, while CP Pyle hit his second home run of the season. Logan ClarkCale Oehler, and Frankie Vasquez also recording multi-hit outings.

Blake Altschuler (4-1) earned his fourth victory of the season behind a five-and-two-thirds-inning outing with nine hits and four earned runs allowed. Matthew Evans hurled two and a third innings of one-run ball, while Ethan Coleman worked the ninth inning for the Tornados.

Methodist struck first with a run in the top of the first inning, but BC utilized a five-run bottom of the third to build an early 5-1 lead. Clark and Oehler each drew bases-loaded walks before Vasquez used an infield single to score a run. Pyle capped off the inning with a two-RBI single.

Methodist used a two-run homer in the top of the fourth that cut the deficit in half, 5-3, but Brevard found an answer in the bottom of the fifth when Pyle drilled a two-run homer that was immediately followed by Miller's solo shot, pushing the lead back up to 8-3 for the Nados.

Miller continued his big day at the dish with an RBI double in the sixth, followed by an RBI single by Pridmore. BC added more insurance that it would prove to need in the bottom of the eighth when Pyle scored on a passed ball and Logan Sawyer came across on a wild pitch, making it a 12-5 ball game.

Brevard got two quick outs following a leadoff single in the top of the ninth, but Methodist would not go away, drawing a pair of walks to load the bases before a pair of two-RBI singles and another RBI single coupled with a throwing error cut the Tornado lead to just two runs, 12-10, while the Monarchs had runners at second and third. Brevard finally halted Methodist's rally with a 5-3 groundout, securing the series win.

The Tornados compete in a midweek home matchup vs. Bob Jones scheduled for Tuesday, April 9 at 4 p.m.
