Bates baseball doubles up UMaine-Farmington, wins 8-4 in non-conference action

BRUNSWICK, Maine -- The Bates baseball team scored three times in the fourth inning to take the lead for good in an 8-4 win over the University of Maine at Farmington Tuesday afternoon in a game played at Bowdoin's Pickard Baseball Diamond.

With the score tied at one, junior Ben Genser (Newton, Mass.) got the offense started by reaching on an infield single to lead off the bottom of the fourth. He stole second and came around to score when senior Noah Jankowski (Methuen, Mass.) reached on a throwing error, advancing to second on the play. Jankowski moved to third on a fly out and scored when senior Dylan Azcárate (Tiburon, Calif.) ripped a single to left. Azcárate stole second base and moved to third on a ground out. Then senior captain Jack Brennan (West Hartford, Conn.) doubled him home and Bates led 4-1.

The Beavers (4-13) got a run back in the sixth thanks to a bases loaded walk, but junior Micah Sheats (Niwot, Colo.) struck out the next batter to leave the bases loaded, preserving a 4-2 lead for Bates.

The Bobcats (11-9) added to their lead with two runs in the bottom of the seventh. With one out, senior captain Chris Cimino (Scarborough, Maine) singled to left and proceeded to steal second base. Then with two away, junior Brandon Biggane (Rensselaer, N.Y.) smacked his team-leading sixth home run of the season, a drive out to left that put Bates up 6-2.

Bates got more insurance in the eighth. Sophomore Gibby Sullivan (Yarmouth, Maine) drew a walk to start the frame and advanced to third on a failed pick-off attempt that got away for a two-base error. Azcárate doubled him home, and Bate eventually loaded the bases with one out. First-year Henry Prince (McLean, Va.) singled in a run to make the score 8-2.

The Beavers answered with two runs in the top of the ninth, but it was too little too late as the Bobcats secured the win when junior Matthew Shrake (Chicago, Ill.) got a strikeout and a fly out to end the game.

Senior Corbin McAlpine (Boxborough, Mass.) got the start for Bates and tossed three innings of one-run ball, allowing two hits and striking out one. Sophomore Max Dio (Wellfleet, Mass.) picked up the win with two and two thirds innings of one-run ball out of the bullpen. Dio (1-0) allowed two hits and struck out one. First-year Theo Zacharia (Manhasset, N.Y.) shined out of the bullpen in his collegiate debut, striking out five batters in two shutout innings.

Genser led the way offensively for the Bobcats, going 4-5 at the plate. Cimino reached base four times, going 2-3 with a run scored, an RBI, and two walks. Azcárate finished 2-4 with a run scored and two RBIs.

The Bobcats return to the campus of Bowdoin College on Friday to take on the Polar Bears in NESCAC East action, with first pitch set for 3 pm.
