Offense fuels W&J in Senior Day sweep

WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College baseball team totaled 29 runs as they recorded a pair of victories over visiting Thiel College Saturday in a Presidents' Athletic Conference twinbill at Ross Memorial Park. 
 
The pair of wins improved W&J to 15-1 in PAC play and 24-9 overall. The losses drop the Tomcats to 9-9 in conference play and 14-21 overall. 
 
Game One – W&J 18, Thiel 2 
 
The Presidents scored early and often in the game one victory over the Tomcats. W&J scored 18 runs on 18 hits in the opener. The Presidents scored in each of the first four innings and in five of their six at bats overall in the seven-inning shortened contest. 
 
Jacob LaDuca (Canisius, N.Y./Clarence) was hit by a pitch and stole second base in front of a one-out RBI single by Drew Garth (Glenshaw, Pa./North Hills) that opened the scoring. RBI doubles by Nolan Lutz (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette) and Joe Lehner (Painesville, Ohio/Lake Catholic) advanced the lead to 3-0 after the first frame. 
 
W&J scored three more times in the second inning. A two-run double by Brian Feldman (Gibsonia, Pa./Eden Christian Academy) and an RBI single by LaDuca pushed the lead to 6-0. 
 
Feldman continued his torrid stretch at the plate with a two-run single in the third to make the score 8-0. 
 
After Thiel got on the board with a run in the top of the fourth, W&J responded with five more in the bottom half. A two-run double by Kyle Jones(Donegal, Pa./Mount Pleasant) and a two-run double by LaDuca swelled the lead to 13-1. 
 
Thiel got a solo home run in the top of the sixth. W&J came back with five more runs in the bottom of the inning. Lehner recorded an RBI single while Jones tacked on a two-run double as W&J finished off the 18-2 win. 
 
Lehner and John Klein (Vienna, Va./Madison) paced the offensive efforts with four hits apiece. 
 
Feldman finished with three hits, four RBI and three runs scored. LaDuca had three hits and three RBI. 
 
Dante DiMatteo (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) turned in another strong effort on the mound. The junior tossed five strong innings, allowing just one run on five hits. DiMatteo struck out three and walked none. DiMatteo is now 4-0 this season. 
 
Will Frank (Davie, Fla./NSU University School) and Tyler Brooks (Alexandria, Va./Saint John's College), a pair of seniors, pitched the final two innings. 
 
Game Two – W&J 11, Thiel 5
 
The Presidents finished off the sweep by scoring 11 more runs on 14 hits in game two. 
 
Aided by a hit by pitch and an error, Thiel pushed across three runs in the top of the first inning. 
 
Garth was quick to help the Presidents cut into the deficit. Garth slugged his seventh home run of the season. His two-run shot in the bottom of the second made it 3-2. 
 
Garth then doubled home Klein to the score in the third inning. Garth gave the Presidents the lead for good with an RBI single in the fourth. A sac fly by Lutz tacked on another run to make the score 5-3 Presidents. 
 
W&J scored four more times in the fifth. The inning was highlighted by a three-run home run by LaDuca. 
 
The Presidents plated two more runs in the sixth to bolster their lead to 11-3. Thiel scored twice in the seventh to conclude the scoring. 
 
LaDuca and Garth led the offense with three hits apiece at the top of the order. LaDuca had three RBI and two runs scored. Garth finished with four runs driven in. 
 
Jake Stiehl (Reston, Va./South Lakes), Andrew Miko (Portage, Pa./Portage) and Klein had two hits each. 
 
Ethan Marszalek (Katy, Texas/Seven Lakes) picked up the win with five shutout innings.
 
Max Stanger (Buffalo, N.Y./St. Joseph Collegiate) and Ethan Boring (Ligonier, Va./Ligonier Valley) 
 
The Presidents honored their 11-man senior class prior to the doubleheader. W&J has put together a 128-36 record during the past four seasons. This group has helped W&J win three PAC Tournament titles and make three appearances at NCAA Regionals.
