Bison Set Wins Record in Sweep of Lasell

DUDLEY, Mass. (4/28/2024) – The Nichols College baseball team continued to break record this season, as they entered uncharted territory with their 25th and 26th wins of the season, as they swept Lasell University in a pair of seven inning games. The Bison won game one 3-0 and the second 8-5 on Sunday afternoon from the Nichols Baseball Field.

Senior Brennan Hyde hit another home run in the first game, as he went 3-6 on the day, with four RBI and two runs scored. Teammate Ben Jerome was also 3-6 on the day with an RBI and three runs scored. Sophomore Liam Flynn hit his third home run of the season.

The Bison entered the record book as a team twice in today's doubleheader. With the win in game one, the Bison earned their 25th win of the season to break the win record set by the 2016 team that won 24 games. The team also broke the single season home run record (33) with their 34th and 35th home runs of the season, breaking the tie with the 2022 team.

Game 1: Nichols 3, Lasell 0

Game one was a fast-paced game, with neither team really getting any momentum going. The Bison did strike first in the bottom of the second inning. Junior William Nath singled to open the inning and after a walk, stole third-base on a double steal. Then with one out graduate student Jim Marasco lifted a sac fly into fight field, and score Nath for a 1-0 lead.

In the third inning, Nichols added two more runs. Hyde launched his ninth home run of the season to center field and scored Jerome in the process for a 3-0 Nichols lead. This score held, and the Bison earned the win over Lasell.

Sophomore Aidan Whitten (4-0) earned his fourth win of the season, with a complete game from the mound for the Bison. Whitten struck out six batters and allowed three hits in the 7.0 innings of action in the win.

Game 2: Nichols 8, Lasell 5

Lasell was the first team to score in the second game, when they plated two runs in the top of the first inning. Nichols answered with a run of their own. Graduate student Will Kleinhenz singled to right field and scored Jerome, who doubled to open the inning. Nichols trailed 2-1.

Lasell scored two more runs for the visitors, making it 4-1. Flynn opened the bottom of the second inning with a walk and then Marasco doubled to put runners on second and third. Flynn scored on a pass ball, to cut back into the lead. Jerome then singled into right field and scored Marasco. Nichols trailed 4-3.

Lasell added their fifth run I the third inning and the Bison once again added another run in the bottom of the inning. Flynn scored Hyde with a sac fly.

Nichols earned their first lead of the game in the fourth inning. After a walk and Jerome being hit by a pitch, senior Johnny Knox hit an RBI double, to score junior Luis Vargas and tie the game at 5-5. Hyde then singled up the middle, scoring Jerome and Knox, making it 7-5.

Flynn added some insurance with a solo home run into right field, making it 8-5 Nichols. The Bison hung on to win 8-5 against the lasers.

Junior Sean Ryan (2-0) earned the win in relief for the Bison, throwing 3.1 innings of action. Ryan struck out five batters and allowed three hits. Teammate Patrick Doyle earned the save for the Bison, with 2.2 innings of action and allowed one hit.

Nichols (26-9) will continue their home stand as they welcome in Anna Maria to Dudley. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
