Zach Ullrich wins career game 100 as Roanoke Baseball sweeps VWU

The Short story: Head coach Zach Ullrich earned his 100th career win in the first game and the second-seeded Roanoke College baseball team swept No. 7 Virginia Wesleyan University 8-3 and 13-6 in the first round of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournament Friday at Calfee Park.

The Maroon bullpen came up big on the day, throwing nine and 2/3 innings scoreless innings while allowing just five hits. 

 How it happened (Game 1):
*The Marlins scored a run in the first and second innings to open a 2-0 lead.
*Hayden Giordano hit a solo home run to left center in the bottom of the second but VWU regained the two-run lead with one in the third.
*Giordano singled to bring in a run in the fourth and Parker Stallard drilled a two-run home run later in the frame.
*The Maroons followed the three-run fifth inning with a three-run sixth, with Cayden Freels hitting a two-run double.  
  
Inside the numbers (Game 1):
*Freels hit three doubles and Corey Coogan had two hits, including a triple.
*Giordano and Stallard also walked.
*Anthony Sullivan earned the win with four scoreless innings out of the bullpen. Trevor Orth tossed three scoreless frames to earn the save, striking out six and allowed just one run and one hit.

How it happened (Game 2):
*Giordano put Roanoke ahead in the first with a two-run single and Nate Prince had an RBI single in the second to make it a 3-0 game.
*Micah Fox fueled a six-run Marlin third inning with a grand slam. The Maroons chipped away at the lead with runs in the third and fourth innings on hits by Freels and Coogan, respectively.
*Roanoke blew the game open with eight runs in the fifth inning to go ahead 13-6. Prince, Dylan Bonzon and Giordano had RBI singles and Coogan and Jonny Wall drew bases loaded walks in the frame and neither team scored the rest of the game.

Inside the numbers (Game 2):
*Prince had three hits, two runs and two RBI.
*Bonzon, Kyle Moshier and Giordano each had two hits and Moshier also drew a walk.
*Coogan and Wall doubled and walked.
*Jackson Murphy battled back after the six-run third inning to pick up the win on the mound, striking out eight over 6 1/3 innings. Isaac Brooks closed out the game's final 2 2/3 frames, allowing no runs and just two hits and no walks.  

Up Next:
*The Maroons (24-18), the University of Lynchburg and the other two advancing teams will travel to Tysons, Va., for a double-elimination showdown at Capital One Park for the ODAC trophy and an automatic entry into the NCAA Tournament. Games at Capital One Park will be conducted Thursday-Saturday, May 9-11. Each team will play once on Thursday with three games on Friday with at least one contest on Saturday. A possible winner-take-all title game would also be played on Saturday depending on the previous results in the double-elimination format.
