Aurora stumbles on Thursday

Thomas More turned three double plays Thursday as it upset No. 21 Aurora, 7-3, on the fourth day of the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational at the Lake Myrtle Complex in Auburndale, Florida. Senior pitcher Paul Uhl, earned the win as he pitched seven innings and gave up two runs (both earned) on six hits and struck out two.  Junior pitcher Andy Roenker pitched two innings of relief and allowed one run (earned) on two hits and struck out one.

John Macon Smith's two-run homer to right field in the bottom of the first set the tone for the remainder of Guilford's 10-6 nonconference win over visiting Averett. The Quakers began the game with nine unanswered runs until the Cougars tallied six runs over the fifth and sixth innings, narrowing the gap to 9-6. Averett would get no closer as Guilford added a late run for the final total.

Behind eight strong innings on the mound from senior Jay Magro, Olivet opened the 2013 season with a 4-2 win over Ohio Northern at the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, Fla. Senior Andrew Brawley threw a 1-2-3 ninth inning to pick-up the save.

A Stephen Gaylor groundout cleared the bases in eighth helping Berry beat Sewanee, 10-9. The play allowed Dusty Tyson to score the tiebreaking run, as Berry baseball won the Southern Athletic Association matchup. Tyson scored three runs and drove in two for Berry.

The Dutchmen opened the season with a pair of complete game wins from Dane O'Neil and Phil Kemp as Union prevailed in wins of 10-0 and 9-1 respectively over Clark. Catcher David Peretti sparked the offense registering six RBI's in the two games at the RussMatt Invitational. In game one, O'Neil, scattering seven hits over seven innings while striking out six and walked three. In game two Kemp was able to break up five hits over seven innings, striking out seven while only conceding one walk.

In Fontbonne's opening game of the season, they snapped Washington's (Mo.) three-game winning streak with a 4-3 win on the road. Fontbonne scored all four of its runs with two outs in the top of the ninth inning. Dustin Graves picked up the win in relief, allowing two hits and two earned runs in two innings pitched.

Ohio Northern split its two games on Thursday, defeating Dominican 8-5 and falling to Widener 4-2 at the Gene Cusic Classic. Against Dominican, freshman Grant Wilson led the Polar Bears, going 5-for-5 with two RBI's and a run scored.

Tommy Kocur drove in four runs on two hits to lead Penn State Behrend over Lebanon Valley 11-0. The Lions scored a season-high 11 runs on 13 hits to earn their third consecutive victory. Tylor Williams picked up the win in his first career start for the Lions. Williams struck out 10 while only giving up three hits in seven innings of work.

John Carroll jumped all over Eastern Nazarane early, and continued the hit parade throughout the day as the Blue Streak swept the Lions 13-0 and 9-4 in Fort Myers, Florida. In game one, David Lykens led an offense that scored eight runs in the first three innings. Lykens contributed four RBI while the Blue & Gold pounded out 18 hits. In the afternoon contest, the John Carroll bats picked up where they left off. Ryan Konsler was an offensive dynamo with two triples and one double in the night cap.

Moravian defeated Bluffton, 4-2, in the Snowbird Classic. Freshman pitcher Brett Wagner earned his first collegiate victory in his first start after going 5.1 innings while striking out four and allowing one unearned run.

Freshman Sean Van Gieson threw eight innings of shutout baseball to help lead Catholic to a 4-0 win over Ursinus. Pat DeToro and Dan Hinchfliff combined for five hits, four runs scored and a RBI as the Cardinals won their third straight. Van Gieson was masterful all day on the mound, striking out five and allowing only three hits to earn his first collegiate win. Chris Nee worked a scoreless 9th to seal the win. Ursinus lost an afternoon game to Mount Mount Aloysius 11-4.
