Mount Union sweeps Sunday games

Two strong starts from junior pitchers Zach Carlino and Matt Murzynski led Mount Union to 2-1 and 6-1 season opening wins against Greensboro Sunday in Lakeland, Fla. The duo combined for 17 strikeouts over 13.0 innings as Mount Union is 2-0 to start the season. Carlino struck out nine and scattered seven hits over seven innings for the complete game victory. Murzynski retired the first 11 Greensboro hitters in order as he struck out eight over 6.0 innings.

A six-run sixth inning and a dominant relief outing by freshman pitcher Neal Krentz led the way as Case Western Reserve opened the 2013 UAA Championship with a 7-4 victory versus Emory at Sanford Memorial Stadium. Krentz came on early in relief due to an injury and logged 5.1 innings without allowing an earned run. He struck out four, did not walk a batter on 84 pitches, and surrendered just five hits while inducing a pair of double plays.

A pair of 10-run offensive explosions from Manchester's offense helped lead the Spartans to a key regional sweep of DePauw. The Spartans, improving to 8-0, used an early-innings rally to win game one 10-2 and the same formula in the late stages to claim the nightcap by a similar score.

The Maryville diamondmen earned their first USA South series sweep with a 6-4 win over Ferrum on Maryville's Scotland Yard. Chris Sutherland limited the Panther bats to only three earned runs over 8.1 innings of work to earn the victory on the mound for the Scots. Sutherland scattered nine hits, striking out three before Nick Bowers earned the save after facing three batters in the ninth.

J.P. Dennehy and Joe Hulme each rapped out a pair of hits while freshman Paul Vegara spun a one-hit shutout in his collegiate debut as Wentworth opened the 2013 campaign with a pair of wins, sweeping Cazenovia, 21-3 and 3-0.

Senior catcher Viin Fondacaro finished 5-for-7 with five RBI to help William Paterson cruise to a 15-0, 9-4 sweep of visiting Manhattanville. William Paterson took the lead in the first inning of game one and didn't look back en route to a dominant win of the day's opening contest. The bats remained hot in game two to break out the brooms.

Farmingdale State swept Plattsburgh State in two 9-inning games in Farmingdale, N.Y. In the Doubleheader sweep, senior left fielder David Zilnicki stole his 38th career base, passing former record holder Luis Feliciano for most stolen bases in school history.

Matt Delegato threw his first complete game in Pacific's win over George Fox.

Pacific received a complete game gem from pitcher Matt Delegato and the offense capitalized on a key error by the George Fox defense in a three-run sixth inning as the Boxers earned their first win of the season, knocking off the Bruins 3-0 in NWC action at Chuck Bafaro Stadium.

St. Joseph's (Brooklyn), helped by a pair of home runs by Mike Cundari, captured both ends of a doubleheader against Maritime with a 10-4 victory in game one and a 6-2 triumph in the nightcap on at Reinhart Field. The Bears (5-0) improve on their best start in school history.

The results were the same as yesterday, but the means of getting there were much different as Oberlin had to come from behind in both games to defeat the D’Youville Spartans by the scores of 6-4 and 11-5 at All-Pro Freight Stadium in Avon, Ohio.

Stevens split a doubleheader with Staten Island at Dobbelaar Field, 4-3, 7-1. The Ducks dropped the opener but bounced back to take the night cap. Ryan Mannello, in as a defensive replacement, delivered a three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth to blow game two wide open and cap off the four-run inning for the Ducks. Tyler Courter needed just 62 pitches to get through six innings and the win.
