Titans, Wartburg hold top spot on Friday

Illinois Wesleyan took game one from Carthage 4-2. The two teams conclude the series with a Noon doubleheader on Saturday. Matt Hart limited the Red Men to one run on six hits and two walks over eight innings.  John Munyon over to start the ninth inning and earned a shaky save, his third of the year. Kevin Callahan hit his 32nd home run of his career and is tied for second all-time at IWU and four behind the record of 36 held by Bob Williams.

The second-seeded Hampden-Sydney rebounded in the 2013 ODAC Tournament with a 3-1 win over sixth-seeded Roanoke. With the win, Hampden-Sydney moves on in the elimination bracket and Roanoke ends their season with a 18-21 record. In the second game in today's ODAC Tournament, Bridgewater (Va.) scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to eliminate  Shenandoah, 4-3.

Will Edwards went the distance, throwing a complete game, three-hit shutout as Millsaps downed Sewanee 12-0 in game one of the SAA tournament. The Majors advanced to take on Hendrix, a 6-2 winner over Oglethorpe 6-2. At Birmingham-Southern, the Panthers defeated Centre 5-1. Birmingham-Southern will play Berry as Casey Gray led Berry to a 4-1 win over Rhodes.

The Louisiana College Wildcats used 13 hits and yet another complete game performance from senior ace Seth Webster to take game one of their ASC Tournament series 10-1 against Mary Hardin-Baylor. Webster, who tied the Louisiana College Division III era record for wins with his 10th of the season, went all nine innings, scattered seven hits, walked one, and struck out six while giving up just one run, which was unearned. Texas-Tyler, Texas Lutheran, and Concordia (Texas) were opening day winners.

In the SCAC tournament, Centenary (La.) and Trinity were easy winners over their opponents. The Gents defeated Austin 19-3 and the Tigers won 21-1 over Dallas. Dallas cameback in their second game of the day with a 4-3 win over Southwestern. Southwestern is the only team to be eliminated after two days of tournament play.

Brandeis senior Mike Swerdloff tossed a complete-game five-hitterr to lead the Judges to a 2-1 upset of Salve Regina, the No. 8 team in New England. Swerdloff, who saw Brandeis score just one run in his previous three outings, held a team to a season-low five hits for the third time this season. He tossed his third complete game in a row and the eighth of his career, throwing 103 pitches, 74 for strikes. Swerdloff struck out six for the third-straight game and did not walk a batter as he improved to 5-3 on the season.

John Muha became Muhlenberg's all-time leader in hits when he singled leading off the bottom of the first against Dickinson, breaking the tie he had held with Joshua Carter.

Casey Fox belted a pair of home runs and starting pitcher Tommy Bergjans went eight innings to earn his seventh win of the year without a loss for Haverford in its 3-1 victory over visiting Franklin & Marshall in Centennial Conference action at Kannerstein Field.

A pair of freshman stepped up when the team needed them most as pitcher Carter Burns and shortstop Raul Shah helped lead No. 3 Johns Hopkins to an 8-2 defeat of Washington College. Burns allowed just one earned run in seven innings and Shah notched his first two collegiate hits as Johns Hopkins regained a two-game advantage in the Centennial Conference standings heading into the final day. Seniors Ryan Zakszeski and Jeff Lynch also came up big, combining for six hits, four RBIs and two runs.

After losing a tight 6-4 decision to Simpson, Coe bounced back for a convincing 13-1 victory over the Storm in the nightcap. Senior Ben Strellner earned the victory on the mound. Strellner went the distance, giving up one earned run on four hits. in other IIAC action, No. 20 Wartburg took both games of the first doubleheader against Dubuque 5-0 and 15-3 in eight innings.

Olivet split a MIAA twinbill today at Trine. Backed by a complete game pitching performance from junior Jake Ball, the Comets won the first game, 6-2. The Thunder gained the split with a 5-0 shutout win game two.

The top five players in the Alvernia lineup delivered eight of the team's nine RBIs in a 9-5 win over Arcadia in Commonwealth Conference action at Erny Field. The Crusaders clinch the top seed in next week's Commonwealth Championship and will know their first round opponent after tomorrow's doubleheaders.

Rose-Hulman senior Jordan Chipka slapped a two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the ninth to lead the Fightin' Engineers past Defiance 9-8 in the opener of a three-game HCAC series. Defiance led 8-7 before Chipka lined a double past a diving Joel Musser to score senior Matthew Turk with the tying run and pinch runner Evan Witsken with the game winner. Turk and senior Donald Stopka started the inning with singles.

New Jersey City is making a habit out of beating nationally ranked baseball teams. Rookie right-hander Tommy Trela threw the first five and one-third innings before freshman righty Nick DeMarco and sophomore lefty Delio Coutinho closed the door, as the Gothic Knights upset No. 19 ranked Ramapo on the road, 3-1, in the second game of a two-day home-and home series at Jeff Maund Field.

The St. Scholastica scored 29 runs in 15 innings as the Saints easily defeated the Knights in both games of the doubleheader. The Saints won 14-4 in eight innings in the first contest and 15-1 in the second contest, which lasted seven innings.

Manchester had five players register multiple-hit contests and received strong pitching en route to a 9-2 win over Bluffton. The Spartans trailed the host Beavers 1-0 through two before a four-run third inning outburst gave them the lead for good. Senior outfielder Cody Schell and sophomore  designated hitter/outfielder Kyle Norris each smacked RBI singles in the frame.

Augustana exploded for four runs in the top of the eighth inning to overcome a two-run deficit and then held on in the ninth inning to defeat Wheaton (Ill.) 9-8 in the opening game of a three-game series in Carol Stream, Illinois.

Kenny Durling was just a triple shy of the cycle and he and Julian Faria hit back-to-back home runs in top of the third to lead Misericordia to an 8-3 victory over Wilkes in Freedom Conference action at Artillery Field.  Durling went 3-5 with two RBI while Faria was 2-4 with three RBI to lead the Cougars' offense. Joe Tagliaini also hit a two-run home run while Chris Boroch added a pair of hits.

St. Olaf swept Carleton 9-5 and 7-1 in a MIAC baseball doubleheader behind Dylan Porter, who went a combined 6-for-6 in the doubleheader. In the nightcap, Alex Lampert scattered seven hits in a complete game victory, striking out four and walking one to get his fourth win of the year to complete the sweep for St. Olaf.

Manhattanville fell in a back-and-forth affair with the FDU-Florham Devils by the score of 10-9 in 10 innings. Sophomore bobby Guerra had the go-ahead hit in the extra frame to put the Valiants ahead, but the Devils came back and scored three in the bottom of the inning for the walk-off victory.
