Monday unkind to ranked teams

St. Thomas jumped on UW-Whitewater early in game one and went on to win 8-5 while the Warhawks flipped the script on the Tommies in game two and went on to win 7-2 to split a doubleheader in Lake Myrtle, Florida Monday.  The Warhawks are 6-1 overall and have played all of their games in the sunshine state.

For the second time in less than a week, Cal Lutheran earned another 4-3 walk off win as the Kingsmen came from behind to defeat UW-La Crosse in the bottom of the ninth Friday. After Davey Casciola had a two-out RBI single to tie the game the at 3-3 in the eighth inning, Chris Whitmer doubled to lead-off the bottom of the ninth and then Nicho DellaValle lifted the game-winning sacrifice fly into right field and gave CLU its third win of the Tucson Tournament. - See more at: http://www.clusports.com/baseball/news/10491/#sthash.SsO2ubv8.dpuf

With two outs and runners on first and second in the bottom of the ninth inning, junior catcher Tom Ditro hit a single to right field that knocked in the winning run as second baseman, Callan Palmer crossed the plate as the Penn State Abington upset No. 10 Rowan, 4-3. Three different Nittany Lions pieced together a strong effort on the mound for the win.

Kyle Brenner pitched eight strong innings, scattering eight hits, with two strikeouts to lead the Brandeis Judges to an 8-2 victory over the Salem State Vikings at the Central Campus Baseball Field. Rob Trenk and Liam O'Connor led the Judges' offense, going a combined 6-for-7 with six runs scored.

La Verne scored early in both games against Pacific, using the early advantages to sweep a baseball doubleheader from the Boxers at the Rio Hondo College baseball field. La Verne scored three runs in the first two innings of the opener and then erased a Pacific rally with a three-run eighth inning to beat the Boxers 6-4. The Leopards then made a three-run first inning hold in the nightcap, limiting Pacific to two late runs in a 5-2 victory.

Hamilton closed out its spring trip with a sweep of Bard, winning 3-2 and 10-6. With the wins, the Continentals improve to 7-4, marking their best start in 12 years. Their seven wins are the most on a spring trip since the 2009 team went 8-6. Hamilton pounded out 17 hits in the two wins and struck out 14 Raptors. Zack Becker led the Continentals at the plate with a home run, two singles and four runs scored.

Bobby Sabatino had three RBIs in the first game of John Carroll's sweep over nationally-ranked Mount Union.

John Carroll and the 17th-ranked Mount Union braved the elements and opened up league play with 32 degree temperatures in New Concord. In what was supposed to be John Carroll's home-opener, the games were moved to Muskingum for better playing conditions.  With a layoff of over two weeks the Blue Streaks showed no signs of rust taking game one 9-5 and having a clutch throw to throw out the would-be game-tying run in the second game to take the 2-1 win in the second game.

The Springfield College baseball team beat William Paterson, 7-5 in comeback fashion on Thursday being strong offense from Frank Calabrese (East Longmeadow, Mass.).

Springfield has posted a record of 5-1 on its Spring Break trip in Florida.

On Thursday, first-year Tyler Kelly (Absecon, N.J.) earned the win in relief, the first win of his collegiate career. Sophomore Dan Green (Oakland, N.J.) closed the game out on the mound for the Pride to earn the save.

No. 18 Shenandoah earned its 16th win of the 2014 season with a 14-5 non-league baseball victory over Dickinson. Junior Michael Paul, who was named as the ODAC Player of the Week for the second week in a row earlier today, led the Hornets to the victory over the Red Devils. Paul extended its consecutive games hitting streak to 22 games with a 4-for-5 performance that included seven RBI and three runs scored.

The power surge continued on Monday for Buena Vista, as it scored the final five runs of the game via three home runs, and went on to post an 11-8 come-from-behind victory over Gustavus Adolphus. Brandon Wessels went 4-for-4 with four RBI and four runs scored to help lead the way at the plate. Tanner Truesdell followed with three hits and also drove in four, as Duncan scored a career-best three runs.

Hope started MIAA play, defeating Trine 16-4 in the first game before losing the nightcap 4-3.  Hope capitalized on five errors by Trine in game one but it was the miscues in game two as two walks in the final inning gave Trine the win.

Travis Lane (Canton, Conn.) tossed a one-hitter in the nightcap to help the Springfield College baseball team earn a doubleheader split with Trinity College on Sunday.
