Top teams get wins

No. 10 Birmingham Southern came up winners in a pair of pitching duels with 2-1, 2-0 wins over Centre.  Blake Stevens and Ryan Gaines allowed just five combined hits on the day to keep the Panthers perfect on the season at 10-0.

No. 5 Cal Lutheran swept past Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 8-1 and 12-2. Trey Saito and Scott Peters piched effectively as the Kingsmen offense hummed all day long.  Saito improved to 4-0 after going eight innings and allowing just one earned run while striking out seven. Peters also earned his fourth win of the season. The senior southpaw went six innings allowing two runs while striking out six.

Seniors Mike Daley and Matthew Wagner combined for a one-hitter as Kean picked up their second straight win by blanking FDU-Florham, 6-0. Christopher Franco broke up the no-hitter with one out in the sixth inning with a comebacker up the middle.  Daley exited after that batter, finishing with three strikeouts and six walks.  Wagner completed the game facing less than the minimum after a pickoff in the sixth.  Wagner struck out one.

Collin Nilson hit a three-run home run in the opener and added four more hits in Pacific Lutheran's second 14-run offensive performance in the past three games as the 23rd-ranked Lutes swept a NWC doubleheader over Willamette at John Lewis Field. Pacific Lutheran improved to 6-2 in conference play with 4-2 and 14-2 wins to jump to the top of the NWC standings.

For the first time since 2008, the Earlham is 2-0 to begin the season. Saturday's 6-4 victory over Kalamazoo at Randal R. Sadler Stadium may have been closer than Earlham Head Coach Steve Sakosits wanted, but that didn't matter. The Quakers had some tense moments in the ninth up three runs. Kalamazoo scored a quick run but the Quakers quickly reversed the momentum to get the win.

Baruch earned their first two wins with a doubleheader sweep of Elms at the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, Florida. The Bearcats won 8-4 in the opener as Joseph Cali pitched a solid six innings in the start, while Bogdan Leyton pitched out of a jam in the seventh inning to seal the win. In the second game, Matthew Faziopitched a complete game classic with a line of seven innings, two hits and seven strikeouts for the 2-0 victory.

 Devon DeRaad went 3-for-4 and scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch, leading Occidental to a 7-5 win over Redlands at Anderson Field in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday, and the second game of a three-game series with the Bulldogs this weekend.

Mary Hardin-Baylor completed a weekend sweep of Sul Ross State by taking a doubleheader from the Lobos in Belton. UMHB won game one 6-1 and took game two by a 7-3. The Crusaders used a time tested method in the sweep, combining timely hitting and good pitching for the wins.

Senior left fielder Justin Pilchman was 2-for-3 at the plate with a pair of RBIs and sophomore hurler Nicolas Ampietro allowed just an unearned run and struck out four batters as Moravian opened its 2015 season with a 5-2 win over No. 18 Webster (Mo.) at the Snowbird Classic.

No. 16 Trinity (Texas) extended its win streak to seven games by sweeping a non-conference doubleheader with Schreiner, winning 4-1 and 5-3 at Mountaineer Field. In the opener, Trinity was in control throughout the game but had to rally from a two run deficit. 

Covenant routed LaGrange 16-1 in Saturday's opener, but could not hold a late lead in game two as the Scots fell 4-3 in USA South action at Cleaveland Field. With the win in game one, Covenant snapped a five-game losing skid.

La Roche opened the season with a 6-5 victory over Susquehanna. Pitcher Tyler Ferguson got the opening day start tossing 5.1innings. He gave up just two runs on seven hits while striking out five and walking none. Hamer recorded the win and Cory Podvasnik the save.

Caltech put a scare into the Panthers, but Chapman rallied from an eight-run deficit to ‘run rule’ the visiting Beavers 19-8 and earn the three-game series sweep over Caltech with a pair of wins at Hart Park. In the first game of the SCIAC doubleheader, the Panthers collected 13 hits and got 14 strikeouts in seven innings from its pitching staff for a 14-0 win.

Rose-Hulman completed its annual Florida Spring baseball trip with a 4-2 record, after defeating Fitchburg State 6-5 in 10 innings. The 10th inning rally made a winner out of senior pitcher R.J. Carroll.  Carroll tossed three shutout innings, allowing just two hits and no runs.
