Mary Washington spoils New Rochelle opener

Mary Washington erupted for an eight-run seventh inning to break open its Thursday contest against New Rochelle, downing the visitors, 17-2, at Dickinson Stadium to even its season record at 1-1. This was the inaugural game for the Blue Angels who is playing baseball for the first time. Ramsis Ruiz and Kevin France each had three hits for the Eagles, with Mason Riser and Christian Hague each adding two. Riser and France scored three times and drove in three, while Mark Smith and Ruiz also added three RBI apiece. Junior Joe Thompson gained the win in relief, allowing one hit in 3.1 innings of relief, walking none and striking out six. Bryant White closed out the game with three hitless innings one one-walk, six strikeout relief.

Mount St. Joseph welcomed the Wolverines of Grove City to UC Health Stadium for a doubleheader to kick off the 2018 campaign. The Lions would play two completely different games enroute to a sweep. Winning game one 8-0 and game two on a walk-off 8th inning base-hit by freshman Ryan Murray, escaping with a 7-6 victory. In game one the Lions would send ace Alex Wagner  to the mound. The big man would not disappoint, as he carried a no-hitter into the 6th inning. For the game Wagner would throw 6+ innings of 2-hit shutout baseball. For the game his stat line was 6.0 innings pitched, surrendering 2 hits, 1 walk and no runs will striking out 4 Grove City hitters.  After holding the Wolverines scoreless in the top of the 8th in game two, the Lions would walk-off in the bottom of the inning. They would load the bases in setting up the games pivotal moment. With the bases loaded and one out Murray would step to the plate, and with the infield drawn in, he would rip a game winning base hit into right field.

It was a successful home opener for the Pfeiffer baseball team on Thursday afternoon as they defeated Elmira by a score of 5-3 to extend their win streak to five games. First baseman Kirby Lambert was the hero for the Falcons, as he hit a go-ahead grand slam in the bottom of the 8th inning that turned out to be the game winner to help give Pfeiffer a home opening victory. It was a pitcher's duel throughout as the Falcons' Willis Carter along with the Pfeiffer bullpen battled the Soaring Eagles' starter Andy Reed to shut down both offenses much of the game.

Whittier let a four-run lead slip away late, but were able to come out on top 9-8 Thursday afternoon at Hugh B. Mendez Stadium over Castleton. The Purple & Gold have been red hot as of late winning three of their last four and move to 6-3. Brandon Mulrooney finished the game 3-4 with two runs batted in. Matthew Macey was 3-5 with an RBI and Daniel Tuerffs was 2-5 scoring twice and driving in two. Dmitri Washington also had a game going 2-3 scoring twice and driving in one, while also drawing a walk.
