Cougars gets Texas size sweep

After a rough ending to opening day yesterday, Concordia-Chicago took to the field again under beautiful blue skies at GCS Credit Union Ballpark. Their first opponent of the day would be Concordia-Texas. CUC used two runs in the fourth inning along with stellar pitching to secure their first win of the season 2-0. For the Cougars, Adam Gregory was impressive in his Cougar debut, going seven strong innings, allowing no runs and just three hits while striking out six. Mike Formella came in and shut the door on the Tornados working perfectly through the eighth and ninth for his first save. Joe Silva scored the winning run and went 1-3 for CUC.

CUC did not stop there. The Cougars used a big five run third inning to open up a 7-0 lead and then got five innings of scoreless relief work from the bullpen to seal the 7-3 win over Webster. For the Cougars, Brady Roberts went 2-5, scoring twice to lead the offense. Cody Caballero went four innings allowing three runs on the mound. Alex Meyers picked up the win going three innings while striking out four. In total the Cougar bullpen allowed just four hits on the night over five innings of work and didn't surrender a run.

No. 22-ranked Texas-Dallas got another solid outing from a senior starter and belted 16 hits as the Comets rolled to a 14-0, seven-inning victory over Belhaven to wrap up the three-game ASC series with the Blazers. Senior Cole Hanson tossed a complete-game shutout for the Comets, striking out five without a walk in Monday's lop-sided victory. Hanson needed just 84 pitches to earn his second victory of the season, giving up just three hits to the Blazers. Offensively, Rodney Corbin had the hot bat for the Comets as he opened the game with four straight hits from the lead-off spot, collecting two singles and two doubles through the first four innings of play. He finished the game 4-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. Thomas Craig was 3-for-3 with four runs scored while Mathew Deacon finished 3-for-4 with four RBI.

Rhodes closed out their first conference series with an 8-3 victory over Sewanee to open with three straight wins in the SAA. Rhodes is now 8-4 on the year and 3-0 in the Southern Athletic Association. Matt Dale picked up his second win of the season, fanning five over six innings of work. Jacob Telli went two-of-five with a stolen base, two RBI and two runs scored. Nick Bosma finished three-of-five with a double, two RBI and run scored.

After giving up 25 runs in their season-opening doubleheader losses to Neumann Sunday, Saint Mary's (Minn.) got downright defensive against Milwaukee School of Engineering.  The Cardinals limited the Raiders to a solo, seventh-inning run in cruising to a 9-1 victory in the opening game of the teams' nonconference doubleheader.  And Saint Mary's did their game one defensive effort one better in the nightcap, as the Cardinals got a two-run single from Justin Weinberg in the top of the 10th inning—and three SMU pitchers combined on a 10-inning shutout—in a 2-0 game two victory over the Raiders.

Neumann continued spring break action with a 14-7 win over Rose-Hulman. Cody MacNair went 5-for-6, knocked in six runs and scored three. John Schoelkopf was 4-for-5 with four RBI and two runs scored. Curt Yenchik finished 4-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. Josh Cruz started the game and went 4.2 innings. He allowed four runs on six hits. Nick Henry went 1.1 innings and allowed two unearned runs on two hit. Kutter Endy picked up the save, going the final 3.0 innings.

Mary Hardin-Baylor fell behind early in both games before rallying late with mixed results in a doubleheader split with Howard Payne in Belton. The Cru won game one 4-3 but fell 6-5 in game two. Howard Payne first baseman Black Null had a pair of three RBI games to lead all batters.

On a brisk February afternoon, the Cairn Highlanders opened up their season against the Mavericks of Medaille College. Forced to hit the road due to a wet field, the Highlanders adjusted to the adverse circumstances and won their first game of the season, 3-2, thanks to a workmanlike seven innings from Emilio Alvarez. Medaille got the best of Cairn in game two, winning 6-3.

Arcadia opened the 2018 campaign with a 9-5 win over Elizabethtown. Junior Bryan Gillen and freshman Josh Fulmer each scored twice, while Fulmer and classmate Brett Moyer each drove in a pair of runs. Junior Joel Bartoni picked up the win after throwing five innings of relief, allowing one earned run on four hits with two strikeouts and a walk. Sophomore Jeremy Sabathne got the start throwing two innings. Senior Connor Laigaie tossed two innings of relief. Anthony Lippy took the loss for Elizabethtown, allowing six runs (five earned) on nine hits with one strikeout.

Aurora wrapped up the Spalding University Derby Classic against Olivet, winning 9-6. Austin Wiskow and Jett Wedekind led the Spartans with three hits on the day. Cole Davis added four RBIs for Aurora. Spalding was tops in their home tournament with a 3-0 record. They defeated UW-Platteville 11-9.
