Earlham, Southern Maine earn Tuesday wins

Junior righthander Walter Talcott pitched a five-hit complete game shutout to lead Earlham to a 3-0 win over Washington College on Tuesday morning at Lawnwood Complex, to open the Quakers' annual spring break trip to Florida. Earlham remained undefeated with the victory and improved its record to 12-0. Washington College fell to 9-3 with the loss. Talcott improved his record to 3-0 after scattering five hits, yielding none after the fifth inning, while failing to issue a walk. He did not allow a batter to advance past second base after the third inning, and retired the Shoremen in order in the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings to clinch the victory.

The 15th-ranked Southern Maine Huskys scored four times in the top of the 10th inning to take a 5-1 victory over Washington University in a non-conference game at Lake Myrtle Park. Held in check over the first nine innings by WUSTL's rookie right-handers Rees Viersen and Jared Fong, the Huskies took advantage of the Bears' bullpen in the 10th inning to bat around. Junior Kip Richard led off the 10th with a single off sophomore Jack Besser, and classmate Zach Quintal walked to end Besser's stint on the hill.  Junior Jake Dexter greeted rookie reliever Ty Dalinghaus for a single to load the bases for USM rookie Sam Troiano. Troiano, the Little East Conference Rookie of the Week, walked to force in the go-ahead run.

Mary Washington broke open a 9-9 tie with four seventh inning runs en route to a 13-9 victory over Southern Vermont at Dickinson Stadium. The Eagles, winners of six straight, improve to 11-6 on the season. In the seventh, Garret Lyons led off with a walk, and advanced to third on a single from Bryce Runey. Lyons scored on an error, and Ramsis Ruiz drove in a pair of runs with a double. Stephen Johnston doubled home Ruiz to give the Eagles a four-run cushion, which would be enough in a 13-9 victory.

Case Western Reserve junior shortstop Rocco Maue and junior catcher Tyler Wypiszenski each hit a two run home run to help power the Spartans to an 8-1 win over Roger Williams in Lexington, South Carolina. The win was the fourth-straight win for the Spartans, who improved to 6-1 overall and to 3-0 at the Spartan Southern Classic.  Roger Williams dropped to 1-6 with Tuesday's loss. Senior right-handed pitcher Ben Murphy did not allow an earned run, en route to earning a win and improving to 1-1 on the year.  He scattered eight hits over 5.1 innings, surrendering just one run and walking one batter.

On a brisk evening, freshman Ryan Cox led Piedmont to a 2-0 win over Stevens as Cox picked up his first collegiate win on the mound with eight strikeouts. Cox earned the win with six innings pitched while the Piedmont bullpen of Alex Andrew, Matt Vonderschmidt, and Buddy Green combined for the final three innings giving up no hits. Green earned his first save of the season pitching the ninth.

An Eddie Riley single in the top of the ninth inning proved to be the deciding score as No. 1 UMass-Boston held on to earn a 4-3 win over RIT at Lake Myrtle Maine Field. Riley's game-winning single plated catcher Jack Harrington who reached base after being hit by a pitch to lead off the final inning.  The junior transfer then moved over to second base after Sal Frosceno laid down a sacrifice bunt.  Riley would then rip a single to left field, which sent Harrington on his way home.

Cole Bixler had three hits and drove in three runs to lead Misericordia to a 9-1 win at Wesley. Ian McCole allowed just one unearned run over seven innings and James Magaldi and Zach Mason both worked a shutout inning in relief. McCole scattered five hits while striking out four. Parker Abate added three hits and Kenny Jarema had two hits and an RBI. Santo Guinta added a solo homer as the Cougars improved to 8-3.

Framingham State tallied five runs in the second inning and hit a pair of home runs as the Rams defeated Dubuque 15-6 at Kino Stadium at the Tucson Invitational Game. The Rams rattled off 15 hits in the game including three from Kyle Pileski and two apiece from five other Rams.

The powerful hitting continued for Keene State as the Owls pounded out 19 hits in a 14-6 win over FDU-Florham at Lake Myrtle Sports Park No. 5. Mac Struthers was 4-for-5 with a home run, three RBI, and scored four times, while Devin Springfield was 3-for-5 with a double, a triple, and knocked in five runs. Connor Walsh was 4-for-6 with a pair of doubles and drove in three runs, and Nate Rossi, Tom Meucci, and John Tarascio each had two hits.  That was plenty of offense to support Isaac Keehn (1-0), who made his first career start and struck out six and scattered four hits in five innings of work.  

Behind an impressive offensive performance from Mark Joao and a great pitching effort from Nick Naples, Springfield picked up its third win in Florida, racing past Gordon, 14-1. With the win, the Pride is 4-2-1, while Gordon falls to 1-6 on the year. Naples pitched 5.0 innings, giving up just two hits while striking out six, before Kenny Walton came on to pitch the final 2.0 frames, striking out three. Offensively, Joao went 3-for-4 at the dish with four RBI.

Anthony Crowley and Alex Lafayette hit back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the 15th inning to give Westfield State an 11-10 walk-off win over Franklin and Marshall in a wild win at Chain O'Lakes Park in Winter Haven, Fla. Westfield rallied for three runs in the eighth to force extra innings, came back from a two run deficit in the 12th to extend the game again, setting the table for Crowley and Lafayette's fireworks in the 15th. The Owls were literally down to their last strike, with Crowley in the hole at 0-2 with two out.  He worked the count to 3-2 and then launched a fast ball from the Diplomats' Jake Amorello over the left field fence to tie the game at 10-10. Crowley was 1-7 with five strikeouts and a hit by pitch before his dramatic solo shot.

Freshman right-handed pitcher Justin Lavender tossed eight shutout innings to give Sewanee its fourth straight victory, 8-0 over Covenant. Lavender threw 99 pitches, 60 strikes, en route to an eight-inning shutout ball, allowing just three hits. Drew Mancuso went 3-for-5 on the day with two doubles and an RBI. Jared Demkowicz went 2-for-3 with a homer and three runs scored.

Junior right-hander Charles Batchelder anchored Suffolk to its first shutout victory of the season, as he scattered four hits and one walk in a 9-0 win over Stockton at Lake Myrtle Park as part of the RussMatt Central Florida Invitaitonal. The complete-game win was Batchelder's first of his collegiate career. The Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, native pitched all nine innings of Suffolk's 9-0 win with a career-high nine strikeouts. He gave up just four hits and walked only one of his 30 batters faced.

Webster continued its hot play as the Gorloks scored six runs in the fourth inning and cruised to a 12-3 victory Rutgers-Camden in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational at Lake Myrtle Park.  With the victory, Webster extends its win streak to seven straight games and improves its record to 7-2 on the year, while Rutgers-Camden falls to 4-3 on the season. For the fifth straight game, Webster's offense recorded double-digits in hits as they collected 12 hits in Tuesday's win, including six extra base hitts. The Gorloks also matched its season high in runs with 12 against the Raptors as Webster also scored 12 runs in its 12-1 win over Transylvania last Sunday.

Brady Cottom singled up the middle driving in Eddie Poster with the winning run in the top of the 10th inning of Marietta College's 7-6 win over Kean. The Etta Express then routed Arcadia, 18-1, in the second game of the day. With the two wins, Marietta improves to 6-1 on the season. Kean falls to 6-7 overall, while Arcadia slips to 5-2 on the season. Marietta forced the extra frame against Kean when Seamus Kenneally blooped a two-out single into center field scoring Connor Golden, who led off the inning with a walk, in the ninth. Cottom went 3-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Mike Hale also had three hits in the game, including two doubles, and drove in a run. Kenneally, Damian Yenzi and Jonathan Pingree each had two hits for the Pioneers.

Marywood's bats awoke as the Pacers took both ends of a doubleheader from Norwich to even their record at 3-3 on the year. Marywood opened with a 6-0 shutout win before exploding for a season high run output in an 18-3 win in game two. Salvatore Monello (1-0) pitched six innings of four-hit ball and struck out three to lead the Pacers in the opener. Jake Schuster was 3-for-4 with two doubles, an RBI and two runs scored in the win. Marywood scored three times in both the third and sixth as they outhit their opponents 10-4 in the game. Trevor Powers (2-for-4) and Mitch Clemons (2-for-3) also had multiple hits in the opening game win. Colin Maldonato pitched one inning of relief to close out the win. In the nightcap, Marywood's bats stayed hot as they scored seven runs in the first and all 18 runs over the opening four innings to cruise to the win. Marywood had 18 hits in game two, including another double from Schuster and a homer from Anthony Navaro. Schuster finished game two 4-for-5 at the plate with two RBI while John Mandarano was 4-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored.
