Cal Lu upsets top ranked Champan

Freshman outfielder Michael Schweyher had three hits and three RBI in Game two helping Montclair State earn a split of its doubleheader at Ferrum College on Friday afternoon.
Senior shortstop Hayden Reyes had three hits and Peter Cosentino collected a pair of RBI as the Red Hawks (3-2) held off the Panthers for a 10-9 victory in the second contest. Ferrum (7-4) took the opener 11-1.

No. 15 Cal Lutheran continued its hot start as the Kingsmen took down No. 1 Chapman, 8-3, at Ullman Stadium. The Kingsmen (11-0, 6-0 SCIAC) had Alexander Rivas on the mound, opposite of Chapman's ace, and it was Rivas that lit up the box score. Rivas pitched 7.1 innings, striking out four and giving up just two earned runs. He won his third game of the season and remained perfect at 3-0. The fire power came from all over the lineup as Zach Bullard, Austin Carrillo and Ryne Yamashiro all tallied two RBI. Carillo and Yamashiro both recorded three hits as Bullard added two.

The second-ranked Trinity (Texas) Tigers opened up a weekend showdown against No. 6 Babson, taking the series opener by a final score of 10-6. The Tigers are now 8-0 to start the season, while Babson takes a loss in its first game of the year. Jack Vonderhaar and Tyler Pettit had three hits each to lead a 14-hit night for Trinity. Vonderhaar had three runs scored and hit his team-leading third triple of the season. Pettit finished with a double and a home run among his three hits, driving in three runs and scoring two more. Rafe Chaumette tied Vonderhaar for the team lead with his third triple of the year, driving in a pair of runs in the game.

Ben Coker picked up his 21st career win at Oglethorpe, setting Berry's NCAA Division III era record in a 13-3 rout of the Stormy Petrels. Coker tossed 7.0 innings, allowing just one earned run and fanning a career-high 10 hitters. He is now an SAA-leading 4-0 on the year. Zack Walch also inked his name in the Berry record books, setting a Division III era record with four walks in a single game.

Texas-Dallas remained perfect in conference play as the Comets handled McMurry, 9-2, to open a three-game ASC road series. The win pushed the Comets to 7-3 overall and 4-0 in ASC play, now riding a four-game winning streak. UTD and McMurry will close the three-game set with a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday at Walt Driggers Field. Junior right-hander Brian Birdwell pitched into the 8th as his offense scored in six innings to open the series with the lop-sided victory. Birdwell (2-1) struck out six while limiting the host War Hawks to two runs on six hits in 7.1 innings of work. Orion Drymond took over with one out in the 8th and closed the game with four strikeouts in 1.2 innings.

Union kept the hits coming as the team improved to 4-0 to start the season, earning a 13-3 win over Castleton and a 7-6 win over Capital at the RussMatt Invitational. The Dutchmen put up six runs in the first inning of the day to take the early lead over the Spartans. All of Castleton's three runs came in the bottom of the first as the Spartans cut their deficit in half. However, Union went on to post three runs in both the second and the third innings, with a lone run in the fourth en route to the 13-3 win in seven innings. The nightcap saw the Capital Crusaders battle back to tie the game in the top of the ninth. However, the Dutchmen pulled through as Joey Palko singled to drive home Sean Callen for the walk-off win.

 
An early offensive outburst set the tone for Wheaton (Ill.)
in an 11-3 rout of Loras on Friday afternoon in the season
opener for both clubs. Wheaton connected on eight extra
base hits including three home runs in posting the program's
highest offensive output in a season opener since Wheaton
scored 15 runs in a win over the Coast Guard Academy to
open the 2012 season. Wheaton closed the doubleheader
with a 10-6 victory in the nightcap to start the season 2-0.

Heading into the top of the ninth inning trailing by four runs, East Texas Baptist University stunned Sul Ross State forcing extra innings and taking an 8-6 win in10 innings. ETBU is now 2-9 overall and 2-2 in the American Southwest Conference. For ETBU, Lucas McCrum led with four hits while Nick Deatherage (two hits, three runs), and James Rupert each drove in two RBI. Peyton Miller received the start and would give up four runs on 10 hits while striking out three in five innings. Daniel Rubio (1.1 IP) and Alek Arellano (1.2 IP, two runs, three hits, one strikeout) would make an appearance in relief while Blake Corbin earned the win for the Tigers going 2.0 innings of shutout baseball allowing one hit and striking out three batters.

Josh Jackson and Zachary Marzano combined for five RBI as the N. 13 Kean breezed past Arcadia by the final of 9-2. Jackson was 2-for-4 with a two run blast to left center as he collected Kean's (5-2) first homer of the season. Sophomore Bruce Weyand (1-0) picked up the win as he allowed just one run and three singles in five innings of work.  Senior Tyler Hopman collected a save after tossing four innings allowing just two singles and one run late.

Sam Mathews threw three and a third innings of no-hit, shutout relief as Marietta opened the 2020 season with a 2-1 win over No. 20 Johns Hopkins. "This was a really good win for us against a quality opponent on the road," Marietta head coach Brian Brewer said. "Our energy was the most positive thing all day. The guys brought great energy from the time we got off the bus until the last out." Mathews took over for starter Justin Aviles who scattered two hits over five and two thirds innings of work. Aviles allowed an unearned run and struck out seven, while walking three. Mathews (1-0) walked one and struck out three to get the win.

The high-powered Emory offense continued clicking, out-slugging Covenant, 16-10, in a high-scoring affair on Lookout Mountain. The Eagles reached double digits for the fourth time this season and third time out of the last three contests, belting out 16 runs on 14 hits. Eight members of the starting nine recorded at least one hit with five Eagles racking up multi-hit performances. Senior Jacob Greene tied his career-high with five RBI on the afternoon, going 2-for-5 with a double, triple and a stolen base. Junior Jacob Singer led both clubs with a three-hit outing, finishing 3-for-6 at the plate with a double and two RBI. Junior Jake Kessinger had one hit in the game, his first career round tripper, as he went 1-for-5 with two RBI.

Down to the final out, Wayne Rode launched a three-run blast over the right field wall to lift the Houghton Highlanders to a game two win, 3-2, salvaging a split with the Cairn Highlanders, who took game one, 5-2. After Kauffeldt lined out to deep left to lead off the inning, a hit-by-pitch put Jared Couch on first. David Wessells followed with a bunt single to third. A strike out put Cairn one out away from the sweep, and Rode quickly went down 0-2. Rode laid off an inside slider but crushed the 1-2 offering to deep right field, giving Houghton their first lead of the day.

Swarthmore College knocked off Eastern University
in a non-conference battle, 5-3, on Friday.

Howard Payne opened up a conference series with a 6-4 win versus the visiting LeTourneau YellowJackets. Joey Villarreal lead all Jacket hitters with two hits and RJ Roberts powered the offense with his three run home run.Xavier Haines started this contest for Howard Payne lasting seven innings and giving up four runs, three earned, on nine hits while striking out five. Bryant Chambers threw a scoreless 8th, striking out one, and Kory Owens slammed the door in the 9th to gain his 2nd save of the year.

Nolan McCarthy was good again on the hill, Oxy's bullpen continues to pitch well and Nolan Upchurch hit his first career homer run as Occidental beat a good Centenary (La.) squad 4-1 at Anderson Field. McCarthy, an All-American in 2019, went six innings with just one earned run against him, four strikeouts, no walks and five hits.  Oxy's bullpen was nearly perfect after McCarthy checked out of the game in the seventh. Max Sterner pitched two scoreless and then Diego Ramirez came on for the save to make it three innings without a run. Sterner has been impressive this year with a 1.89 ERA in 19 innings pitched.

Freshman Matthew Enck and Josh Thorp each drove in two runs with multi-hit games and Shaun Falbo earned a save with a game-ending strikeout that stranded the tying runs as St. Thomas opened its 2020 season with a 7-5 win over Schreiner in Tucson. The Texas team (7-4-1) was playing its 12th game. St. Thomas' Andrew Tri pitched the first seven innings and allowed four hits and three runs while striking out seven. The Toms pounded 12 hits, led by three from Enck in his college debut game. Thorp's one-out triple in the third inning plated two runs. Chandler Schaefbauer drove in an insurance run in the ninth inning with an RBI triple.

Illinois Wesleyan opened the 2020 season with a thrilling extra-inning victory over Fontbonne College Friday afternoon, Feb. 28, at Windsor High School. The Titans moved to 1-0 on the season with a four-run 10th inning to topple the Griffins 8-4. Fontbonne dipped to 4-4 on the season with the setback. Quinn Gudaitis went 6.1 innings on the mound, allowing two runs on six hits, while striking out six. Matt Blaney struck out three in one inning of work to notch the win, while Casey Becker threw a clean 10th. At the plate, four Titans notched multi-hit games. Brandon Skopick went 3-for-5 with a RBI, Nick Figus finished 2-for-5 with a double, and Garrett Shea tallied two hits, scored twice, and drove in one. Eric Kozlowski finished the day 2-for-4 with a RBI, while Jeran Simpson led the team with two RBI.

Sophomore Travis Harvey pitched a complete game for the Southwestern Pirates, throwing 12 strikeouts with only one walk in a 4-1 victory over the Millikin Big Blue. Sparks finished 1-for-2 with two RBIs and Montgomery was 1-for-4 with two runs scored. With the win, the Pirates improve to 4-2 on the season. Southwestern will continue its play in the Millsaps College Classic with a game against Adrian tomorrow.

After going back and forth for four innings, Washington and Lee used another late rally to power its way past Virginia Wesleyan, 11-10, in the first ODAC game of the season. Bryce Burnette tallied four hits in the game and drove in two runs and scored three times. Colin Liebe and JasonVolpicelli both went 3-for-5 at the plate, with Liebe driving in three, while Volpicelli scored three times and drove in one run.
