Denison opens with sweep

Stevenson senior Alex Kidwiler belted three home runs and finished 4-5 at the plate with four RBI and seven runs scored and the Mustangs got a pair of complete-game pitching performances from Matt Reich and Jake Vanko as they swept a MAC Commonwealth baseball doubleheader from Albright by scores of 11-5 and 11-1 Saturday afternoon at Sugar Field.

Highlighted by a walk-off win in the second game of the day, Denison kicked off their 2021 season on Saturday afternoon with a pair of victories, 9-0 and 6-5, over Case Western Reserve at Big Red Field in Granville. Denison's fireworks were capped off in game two of the series after the Spartans fought back with two runs in the top of the ninth to tie the game at 5-5, forcing the Big Red bats back to the plate in the home half of the inning. After Max Lahn roped a single to right and loaded the bases with one out, junior Danny Alvarez sent a grounder to CWRU's shortstop, but the throw to the plate was not in time as Will Krushena scored the winning run and sent the Big Red to 2-0 on the season.

driven in. The Knights' pitching staff carried last
weekend's momentum in the series with Stevens, as
Jeremy Sabathne tossed a complete-game, two-hit
shutout in the opener to pick up his first win of the
season before Luke Fournier and Collin Bowdish
combined for a four-hit shutout in the nightcap.

Right fielder Jon Fleck had a combined four hits, six RBIs and four runs scored to lead Centenary University to a doubleheader sweep of St. Elizabeth University to open Colonial States Athletic Conference play on Saturday afternoon at Our Diamond of Dreams. Game one saw the Cyclones use a five run second inning to take a lead the home team would not relinquish en route to a 10-3 win. In game two, Centenary jumped out to the early lead only to see the Eagles battle back for a 5-4 advantage. The Cyclones battled back to score three in the bottom of the sixth for the 7-5 victory.

It was a happy home opener for Whitman College who won both games of a Northwest Conference doubleheader against Whitworth on Saturday at Borleske Stadium. Whitman won game one 4-2 and took the second 8-7. The opener saw the Blues rally from two runs down, putting two across the plate in both the seventh and eighth innings for the win. The Blues took a big early lead in the nightcap and held on for the win. Brett Williams and Beck Maguire each posted two runs and two hits with Leo Rivera adding two hits, one run and two RBI.

Will Mitchell hit a walk-off single to give Delaware Valley University its first win of the season, but visiting King's College outlasted the Aggies in game two of the doubleheader as the teams split the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom twin bill on Saturday. Mitchell's RBI in the bottom of the eighth earned DelVal (1-5 MAC Freedom) a 2-1 win while the Monarchs (3-5, 3-5 MAC Freedom) put up four runs in the top of the twelfth to take the nightcap, 8-4. Senior pitcher Dakota George got the start in game one and allowed just two hits and three walks with five strikeouts and one unearned run. In game two, each team scored three runs in the third inning and went to extra-innings tied at 4-4. DelVal had its best chance to win the game in the bottom of the tenth when it had runners at second and third with nobody out. Jared Sterner got the fly ball the team was looking for, but the left fielder and the shortstop combined for a good relay to home plate that gunned down Dylan Strunk at the plate and kept the game tied. The Monarchs got the first runner aboard in the twelfth inning via an error and that sparked a four-run frame behind three hits including a two-RBI double to deep left-center field by Matt Mellinger and another two-RBI knock from Chase Heitzman.

Dubuque would play 21 innings to end with an America Rivers Conference sweep of the Wartburg in late inning heroics on Saturday. Game one scheduled for seven innings would extend into the 10th inning. The first error in the game was committed by Wartburg and allowed Zach NcCoy to reach first base with one out. Quincy Bryant pitch ran and would steal second base. Jaked Cekander was intentionally walked. A second strike out would leave two on base with two outs. The catcher, Kyle Radi, singled to centerfield and sent the only run of the game across home plate for the win 1-0 at the bottom of the 10th inning. The second game scheduled for seven innings would once again finish in extra innings. Trailing 0-3 through six innings, the host Spartans would rally in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game after scoring three runs on one hit and and three costly Knight errors. The two teams would play three and a half more scoreless innings before UD performed another miracle. The bottom of the 11th inning started with a Spartan strikeout. Cole DeStefanis reached first base on a hit by pitch and advanced to second on a pass ball. Joe Ungar would finish 1-2 on the afternoon, but no hit was bigger than the one down the right field line to score DeStefanis. The throw was on target and DeStefanis slid under the tag for the game winning score. A game winning celebration at first base with Ungar highlighted the marathon victory in game two 4-3 in 11 innings for the sweep on A-R-C opening weekend.

Parker Browne slung a complete-game, two-hit shutout to anchor Suffolk to its first win of the 2021 season, a 3-0 decision over Lasell in game two of a double feature at East Boston Memorial Park. Suffolk's scoring started in the home half of the inning. In his first at bat as a Ram, Christian Seariac sent a ball to the right field fence, turned on the wheels and hit every bag. The inside the park home run, Suffolk's second in as many games, gave the hosts a one-run edge. Gino Desimone sent a ball over the fence in the bottom of the sixth to tack on an insurance run and add to Suffolk's lead, 3-0. Browne bookend the game with two swinging strikeouts to lock up the victory.

Ithaca College was forced to wait 377 days between games after the cancelation of the 2020 season before returning to action on Saturday evening at Elmira College. The Bombers opened 2021 with a thrilling, 8-7, come-from-behind victory at Dunn Field over Elmira for the team's first win since February 23, 2020. Callaghan went 3-for-5 in the game with a double, while junior Matt Smith was 3-for-4. Jack Lynch, and Kyle Gordon each had two hits apiece as the Bombers racked up 14 hits on the evening. Graduate student Charlie Hammel earned the win in four innings of relief. Hammel struck out five batters, including three over the final two innings. Hammel surrendered just two hits and two earned runs in the outing.

Illinois Wesleyan University split a twin bill against Elmhurst University in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin action Saturday, March 20, at Horenberger Field. The Titans topped the Bluejays 10-3 in the series opener, but dropped game two by a 9-5 tally. Senior Hunter Simon earned the win on the mound. He tossed six innings, allowing six hits and striking out seven. Senior Dan Trudeau picked up a three-inning save, as he tossed the final three frames without allowing a run. Offensively, IWU's 10 runs came on 10 hits and six walks. Junior Jack Schneider (Naperville, Ill.-Benet Academy) led the way with a 3-for-5 effort, along with two RBIs.
Illinois Wesleyan cranked out 13 hits in game two, to go along with eight walks. Rannklev and freshman Will Kafer (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal West) notched three hits each, while Cyrus and Burgh tallied two knocks apiece. Schneider picked up two RBIs in the loss. Greer, Ranneklev, and Cyrus each drove one in. Elmhurst broke the game open with five runs on five hits and an error in the third to take control, 5-0. The Bluejays upped their lead to seven on a two-run home run in the sixth, Greer's sacrifice fly put the Titans on the board. Elmhurst got two back in the seventh, before Illinois Wesleyan rallied in the final two innings.

In an early-season meeting of the two unbeaten President's Athletic Conference teams, Washington & Jefferson College defeated Grove City in two tightly contested games at Ross Memorial Park on Saturday. The Presidents move to 6-0 on the season and 4-0 in PAC play while Grove City moves to 4-2 overall, 3-1 in league play. The first game on Saturday counted towards the league standings while the second game did not. The Presidents handed Grove City their first conference loss of the season as a three-run seventh inning proved to be the difference in a 4-2 W&J win. Much like the Presidents' non-conference win over Bethany, the Presidents dug themselves out of an early hole to come back and win, this time in extra innings.

Sophomore Dominic Roderick was inserted into the line-up as a defensive replacement late in the game but it was his bat that made the big splash in the ninth inning as he scorched a two-strike pitch down the right field line to score the game-winning run and send the Beavers to a doubleheader sweep with a 15-14 triumph in the nightcap Saturday night. BVU loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the night before Roderick's heroics lifted the Beavers to their 14th straight home victory, dating back to the 2019 campaign. Tyler Tennyson notched a career-best five hits, had the two big RBI, and scored twice while Calvin Harris chipped in with a career-high four hits and three runs scored. Tennyson also had a big outing in the opener, throwing a complete-game four-hitter with six strikeouts. He was also 1-for-3 at the plate with a run scored.

A seventh-inning wild pitch allowed Lucas Farren to scamper home for a 5-4 Central College baseball win over Coe College Saturday afternoon, salvaging a split in the doubleheader. Coe (5-2, 1-1 American Rivers Conference) won the first game 2-1 over the Dutch 3-3 (1-1 ARC). Central had a 4-2 lead entering the top of the seventh inning before Coe rallied to tie it 4-4 heading to the bottom of the inning. A leadoff walk put Farren on first and then a sacrifice bunt by left fielder Jared Kampf moved him up to second base. The first of two wild pitches advanced Farren to third before he scurried him for the walk-off win on a second wild pitch. "I told the guys it was exciting, but next time let's just finish it off in the top of the seventh," coach Matt Schirm said. "We'll take a win any way we can get it."

The Houghton Highlanders continue to find ways to win baseball games, sweeping the Alfred State Pioneers on Saturday afternoon, 2-1 and 11-8, to remain unbeaten this season. After a pitcher's duel in game one, the second game was all about offense. Houghton outhit the Pioneers, 4-to-3 in the first game and 11-to-7 in the second. Zach Parr finished the day 4-for-8, including a homerun, a walk and two RBI. Joe Gross went 3-for-3 in game two with two walks and four runs scored.

Entering play Saturday, UW-Superior Yellowjacket sitting at 2-4, with all six games having been played at US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. In those six games, the Yellowjackets tallied a total of 20 runs, and had yet to connect for their first home run of the season. Saturday marked the first time in 693 games the Yellowjackets played a game in Superior, and apparently, there was something about playing in the 54880 ZIP code that agreed with the them, and the offense in particular. The Yellowjackets came out slugging Saturday, belting 10 home runs and scoring 37 times on the way to a doubleheader sweep of Northland at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex in Superior. The Yellowjackets built a big lead on the way to a 22-8 win in the opener, before being forced to battle back from a huge deficit to take the nightcap 15-14. With the wins the Yellowjackets have now won four straight games and evened their record on the year at 4-4.

Catholic University senior Billy Duke totaled three hits and three runs as the Cardinals opened their 2021 season on road Saturday with a 3-2 and 7-1 victory over Drew. Catholic (2-0, 2-0 LC) have won four of the last five against the Rangers at Doc Young Field. Led by wins from sophomore Tucker Alch and junior Jack Zaffiro, the Cardinals limited Drew to just three runs on six hits over 14 innings. With two wins on Saturday, head coach Ross Natoli now has 699 for his career in 36 seasons at Catholic. He ranks 43rd all-time in Division III history and has won a Landmark Conference record 309 games since joining the league in 2008.

Eastern Connecticut State University broke an early tie in the second game by scoring four times in the third inning – two on senior Jack Rich's first home run of the year – to post an 11-3 win over Saint Joseph's College (Maine) and compete a non-conference doubleheader sweep Saturday afternoon at the Eastern Baseball Stadium. In the second game, seniors Rich and Ryan Bagdasarian and junior Matt Malcom all drove in two runs as the Warriors put up runs in five different innings as Eastern (3-0) improved to 15-2 all-time against Saint Joseph's (2-6) with its tenth straight win over the Monks.

respectively. In addition to the thrilling wins, senior
outfielder Travis Zurita recorded his 100th career hit
for the Privateers with a single up the middle in the
top of the third inning in the first game.

Franklin College made their first road trip of the year on Saturday for a pair of games against the Mount St. Joseph Lions. Franklin (5-3) put together a dominant afternoon, recording 24 hits and holding the Lions in check offensively on their way to 13-2 and 14-3 wins, respectively. Krae Sparks allowed just two runs and one hit over four innings before he was lifted after four innings. Nick McClanahan (2-0) took over in the fifth and scattered three hits over four innings, striking out six to earn the win. Mitch Merica (2-0) allowed two earned runs on six hits with four strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings. Nick Elmendorf, Bryce Pause and Tyler Robinson combined to allow just two hits over the final 3 1/3 innings in relief.

Framingham State University returned to the field for the first time in over a year and took game one of doubleheader with Anna Maria College 10-4 at the New England Baseball Complex. Senior Nick Genatossio hit a walk-off home run with two outs to rally the Anna Maria College baseball team to a 3-2 win in the nightcap.

Bridgewater College split its ODAC doubleheader Saturday at Virginia Wesleyan, winning the opener 10-5 before the Marlins rallied to take the second game 7-1. The Eagles jumped out to an early lead in the first game. Virginia Wesleyan grabbed the lead with two runs in the bottom of fifth inning and three more in the sixth to lead 5-3. The Eagles then regained the lead with five runs in the top of the seventh. Tucker Hrasky continued his stellar pitching work out of the bullpen as he worked the final three innings for his second save of the week and third of the season. Hrasky allowed two hits while striking out six batters. For the game, starter Hunter Mohr and relievers William Flanagan and Hrasky combined to strike out 15 batters. In the nightcap, the Eagles carried the 1-0 lead to the bottom of the eighth inning behind RHP pitcher Waring Garber who took a 3-hit shutout into the eighth. Garber allowed the tying run to score in the eighth before leaving with a runner on first and one out. The Marlins exploded for six more runs against the Eagles' bullpen to win the second game 7-1.

The University of Lynchburg swept Washington and Lee University on the road Saturday afternoon as the Hornets defeated the Generals 15-7 in Game one and 19-6 in Game two. In Game one, the Hornets (10-7) got out to an early 1-0 lead but the Generals responded in the bottom half of the fourth with four runs of their own to take a 4-1 lead. In the top half of the sixth, Lynchburg batted around and brought six men around to score, five coming from walks. The Hornets went on to score eight more runs over the final three frames with six more coming again in the seventh. In Game two, the Hornets had another big inning as they batted around and scored 11 runs on only three hits in the fourth inning. The Hornets scored a season-high 19 runs as the offense pounded out 13 hits and walked 11 times.

Thiel College faced the Westminster Titans in two Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) contests on Saturday. The Titans won the first game 8-5 (7 innings) and the Tomcats won the second game 21-15 (9 innings). The doubleheader was originally scheduled to be played at Westminster, so the Titans served as the home team for both games. In game one, the Titans got off to a 4-0 lead before the Tomcats got on the board in the top of the fifth inning with one run. The Titans added insurance runs in the fifth and sixth innings to take an 8-1 lead entering the seventh and final inning. The Tomcats nearly made a comeback, scoring four runs in the inning but fell short, losing 8-5. In game two, the Tomcats kept their momentum going from their near comeback and scored two runs in the second inning and seven runs in the third inning. The offensive showdown continued as there were a total of twelve half innings (six for each team) in which the hitting team scored two or more runs. However, the Tomcats never relinquished the lead and went on to win 21-15.

UW-La Crosse opened its 2021 season with a doubleheader sweep of UW-Eau Claire Saturday afternoon at Copeland Park. The Eagles earned a 13-0 win in seven innings in the opener before a 16-6 victory in eight innings in the nightcap. UW-Eau Claire was also playing its season opener. The Blugolds were playing their first varsity games since the sport was discontinued in 1995.

Penn State Behrend kept an unblemished record with a pair of non-conference wins, 11-1 and 6-5, over Hiram on Saturday. The Behrend Lions spoiled the Terriers home opener as the Lions took an 11-0 lead before letting in the single run in the bottom of the seventh. Wagner ripped his first home run of the season at the right time, knocking it over the fence in the top of the seventh for the game-winning hit and run in game two.

Dominican University returned to Wintrust Field on Saturday after a week off and swept the visiting MSOE Raiders 4-3 and 7-4 to win a pair of NACC non-conference crossover games. Dominican managed just five hits in the contest but did the little things well as it executed four sacrifice bunts while racking up four hit by pitches to grind out the win. Bryant Bagshaw picked up the quality start as he threw six innings of three-hit ball, allowing four hits and two earned runs while striking out five but he would not factor in the decision. Bennett Wogan picked up the win, pitching 1 1/3 innings, retiring all four batters he faced thanks to a pair of strikeouts. Game two was another close contest. MSOE plated two in the top of the seventh due in part to an RBI double down the left-field line and a pair of wild pitches. Dominican answered in the next inning however as Rigdon lead off the frame with an infield single. After Evans sacrificed him to second, Trojan was intentionally walked. After a balk and another intentionally walk, a wild pitch moved everyone up one place to put the Stars back ahead 5-4. With Wano once again up in a timely spot, he doubled to deep left-center, scoring two, to bust the game open 7-4.
